Personally you can't call home wanting money when you are spending $5 every couple of days for cigarettes. It is one thing if she hadn't told them she smoked, but she did so she has to deal with it. If she chooses to spend her money that is for food and necessities for ciggys then let her learn the hard way how to prioritize money.

As a parent, ex-smoker (who started smoking in college while being supported by my parents), now "social" smoker (I bum the ocassional smoke), I feel I have the necessary qualifications to join in this conversation.

Go Vrai! As long as she is getting $$ to live on from you (that includes college $$), she is bound by YOUR rules. Once she is out of college and not getting $$ from you, she is free to start smoking.

I gotta agree here that if the kid's livin' off V&L's dime, she shouldn't be spending that money on "extracurricular" habits.

In all seriousness, Vrai ... any chance that she's picking the habit up in an effort to lose weight? You said she's a performer of some sort, and she's in a strange city away from the 'rents, therefore more likely to be succeptible to peer pressure (i.e., to be thinner on stage) ... any concerns on that possibility?

Mmmm...maybe, but she's following a director path and I've never gotten the impression she's concerned about her weight. It's most likely stress relief because she's in class from 9am to 6pm, then runs off to her show until midnight, plus she's studying for finals.

She just wants Mommy to give her some love, that's all. This has been her MO since she was 11 or 12.
