I had a decent experience there about a year and a half ago with my then 20 month old son. We waited a long time (which was understandable since it was flu season and a Sunday) but the staff was very kind and once the severity had been accessed, he was stable, but needed surgery and the staff at SMH arranged for a Children's Hospital Ambulance to transport my son and I to Walter Reed for his care.

I recently took my son the St Mary's ER. The waiting room was packed. I sat there for 3 hrs waiting for my son to been seen and was told that it would be several more hours because they didn't have any vacant beds in the back. I witnessed a boy who was 7 yrs old spitting up blood and laying on the floor. His parents asked if someone could help them and they were told they would have to wait. I also witnessed people who complained to social workers and upper management staff were seen before this boy and they came in afterwards. After I saw this, I took my son to Calvert who was seen before I could finish getting him registered. I brought him home but later had to return because he wasn't better. He was admitted to Calvert for a few days. I have to say that I was happy with the emergency room at Calvert, excellent service and very clean...not at all like St Mary's.

Think it's bad now (the wait times)? Wait 'til the illegals start moving here en masse. You ain't seen nothing yet.

By the way, how come my co-workers at Pax refer to St Mary's as "the place people go to die?"

All of my experiences at St. Mary's have bee positive. Both of my boys were born there, same exact room. We were all treated very well. No problems with billing or insurance. My oldest son had out patient surgery there and it went very well. I visited the ER once for dislocated shoulder. Was seen within 30 minutes and headed home and hour and a half later. My younger son was at the ER after a fall and it was quick and went well. I guess I have no complaints about SMH.

I have never had issues with St. Mary's. No place is ever going to please everyone. Not even hospitals. I'm sure there will always be someone to say something negative about any place.

While I have not been a patient at either yet, I have accompanied family members to the ER at St. Mary's and visited patients at both hospitals and overall have no complaints.

There are always going to be individuals with attitudes, or having a bad day, but if you look at the big picture, I believe they both provide quality care.

Well, I hope your are the VERY next patient in emergent need wheeled thru the doors to be admited. Good luck! and let me know how you make out!

Anyone else, go north if you can for all and any medical needs. Around here most doctors and staff are owned and RULED by the Shah family mafia! And for you newbies who don't know what or who that is. perhaps you are more blind than you think. And this is also a response to the thread about Lex Park being a desireable place to live. Ha! If you like high taxes, local government run and controlled by a few families (read about the commissioner and the counterfeit for one) and local jets decaying the welfare and the noise levels beyond normal human habitat. Oh, for those of you who work for the base, I am sure you just love the noise and pollution. they cater to your kind. I'll be moving from here soon and damn glad to be getting out of this corrupted swamp! I never had sinus problems till I moved here, or witnessed such a nepotism-riddled base work force, or a local govt so corrupt, they fill their pockets with riches and protect their own kind. and screw the taxpayers and residents. And most residents are too blind to even realize it. Yeah, you enjoy living here. Good riddence to you too...

And we use to say something like that in the US Army back in the 60's and 70's... perhaps your generation might catch on someday... A content soldier is a complaining soldier... but a happier soldier is one that is not complaining. Think about it!

I have never seen a good emergency room in any hospital. There sems to be an unwritten rule that if you go to an emergency room you cant leave for 4 hours.

However ,I went to St. Mary's to have my gall bladder removed by Dr. Roache and cant say enough fine things about either the doctor or the care at the hospital.

I think all of the hospitals in the tricounty are BAD however, I would choose Calvert for minor stuff. With all the research I have done on medial tourism I think I am opting to do just that if i ever need any serious medical procedures done. The hospitals are monitored by a global crdentialing agency/commision , cost about 1/3, doctors have been educated in this country and have bought machines and gadgets from here to use over there. An example in the US hip replacement $40,000, in France $15,000 and in india total cost $5,800. i also know that some insurances will reimburse you for your overseas medical about 1/4 the cost. Health care is such a racket anyway.  I've known too many people who felt perfectly fine, went to the doctor for a routine checkup, doctor "finds something wrong", decides they need surgery and a week later they're dead.  I loathe doctors and try to avoid them whenever possible.  Sure, you can sue them if they screw up but who cares?  You're already dead.

How many is "too many"? Just wondering because I can't say that I've known anyone who has gone through that. I did know someone who went to a DR and found out they were in the advanced stages of cancer. They ended up dead within a month. It was toobad because they never went to the DRs for regular check ups so there was never a chance for early detection.

You know nothing about me. The assumptions you make in your posting are all incorrect. I wish I could say that bad things never happen to me. I was in the NAV. Got out 18 years ago. So, yes, I'm well beyond having a decade of life.

St. Mary's Hospital id okay (as I would say Calvert is also).
If I had an illness that needed diagnosis I would go to neihter. They will do an adequete job on cases that are clear cut. Patient care (in room) is also adequete. Actually it might be better then some of the better medical centers. The ER is another story. Some delays are just beyond their control. I will say that on some occasions I've wondered why all the staff was simply hanging out at the counter - seemed like they had a lot of idle time for a busy room. The receptionist/operator can be an utter bonehead. They seem to be trained in how to ignore a patient/customer who has been in the waiting room for over an hour - long after the last person was taken back.
I know a lot of people who work or worked at St. Mary's Hospital and none has ever complained about how they were treated by their employer.

I agree with Vrai. Sometimes the doctors just do procedures that eventually a fatal to the patient. On the other hand sometimes you have so many diseases that have similar symptoms and it can make diagnosing very hard. i think if you get a "competant doctor" then you're chances are preety good. Last year, I had a fever for 3 1/2 weeks. I did 4 xrays, numerous blood tests, mri, and the several doctors that iwent to couldnot pinpoint the exact cause. I had gone for vacation to kenya so all the doctors were busy looking for an exotoc disease. I told them i couldn't be because I had been back into the country for 3 months when my symptoms. All the "exotic" dieases that they were checking for has in inccubation period of 14 days. So after my pleading of i don't have an exotic diease and a doctor telling me thats why i am not a doctor. I went to the ER the docotr extrmely knowledgeable, good looking came and and goes I don't know what is wrong with you but we'll just put urinary tract infection....ARE YOU SERIOUS!!!!and told me to go to an infection specialist on Monday. monday rolls around go the doctor she starts with her exotic dieases that she is sure it is. After telling her that she can go on the computer and pull out the results of all the tests that were performed. Then she calls for an ultra sound...this was on the 4th week of fever. Doctor calls me and tells me that I should immidiately go to the hospital and have my gall bladder removed as it is about to burst. My stay in the hospital was good that because I was really anal with asking questions, everytime they came to give my meds before they put it in I asked what it was and why i am getting it. I told them to expect repeated questions because I will be going to 3/4 different nurses. Everytime the nurses changed i questioned them if they had read my case and all the meds i am taking etc. I am sure the nurses where happy when i left. BUt Its my life.

When i was 18 had chest pains for months and no doctor would do anything. they said i was too young to have a stroke or heart attack. It made me so mad and cost me a lot of money to go see different doctors that did nothing. Running blood test isnt enough. Well right before my 19th b-day i had a mild heart attack. I have a heart murmur. If the would of done an ultrasound of my heart they could of seen it. You can't put an age on a diagnoses.

I have had nothing but good experiences @ St Marys Hospital. I have been to the ER several times w/ each of my 4 children and delivered my 4th son there. I give them 2

not only that but some of them are jacked up on Rx, I mean speed and downers, some addcted. Its sad. I have seen a nurse smoke pot in front of me, offered me some and I refused, she was not working but still I don't think its a good idea.

I have had many procedures and surgeries at SMH and I have no complaints. I would go there again.
