Maryland raising tax to cover higher cost of unemployment - Baltimore Business Journal:

"The state has hiked the unemployment insurance tax, doubling the amount that companies and nonprofits of all sizes will pay per employee starting next year."

"I certainly appreciate the difficulty that this presents for all
businesses," Perez said."

Well, see? Its OK, Perez appreciates running business' out of the state,
and causing those that remain to increase prices on goods and services.
It's another tax on all of us, but its appreciated!

No, Obama explained that if we raise taxes on businesses that it would be good for all of us, and actually lower our taxes. He explained that the additional costs on all of us for those taxes are not taxing us - we'll actually see our taxes lowered!! But, the lower ability of our money to actually purchase anything - the lower standard of living we'll have due to money going to the government indirectly through our money - isn't really taxing US, that's just taxing the business.

The few percentage points less in taxes we'll pay will be greatly needed for the huge percentage more everything will cost, but that's not a tax on US, just on business. So, as long as you don't buy food, clothing, shelter, transportation related items, or luxury items, you're much better off under the rule of Democrats!

you are correct, the leaches of society (baltimore City and PG county dwellers) will continue to vote the working mans money into their pockets until such a time that they are out numbered, and that just cant happen.

I am not sure doubling the unemployment tax will help pay for the unemployed.

What I think it will do is make it harder to get employment.

Oh My God An Extra $25.50 Per Worker Per Year

Yeah, I know it's a tough time to raise any tax, but if takes an extra $25.50 a year per worker to keep the unemployment fund solvent, it makes sense.

I know none of you have ever lost a job because of factors beyond your control. (Not only are you great employees, but you are able avoid companies that are going to have problems and cut back because you know everything about business) I also know that if you ever did lose your job because of factors beyond your control you wouldn't take the unemployment money because that make you a socialist. Heck, you won't even collect social security or medicare because that would make you a socialist.

For the rest of us, the tax increase is a necessary evil to provide a cushion in case something does happen to our jobs.

Ok its nickel and dinimg

It's called nickel and diming you to death. When is enough, enough?

I understand your point, but ...

The question is: Is this particular nickel or dime well spent?

I would argue yes and I think most people would agree if given the details. My guess is that most folks would not realize that we are talking about doubling a tax that was $25.50 a year based on what has been posted here.

I understand that you may disagree with my judgment on this, but I firmly believe that the way this has been framed causes an emotional response against the tax rather than a reasoned response.

Does it effect all unemployment rates? The minimum is .3%, the maximum is 7.5%, and new employers have a rate of 2.4% currently. Will all rates be doubled resulting in .6%, 15% and 4.8%, the article isn't very clear on it?

The $25.50 per year is not the real issue here. It is MOM and his cronies from Baltimore County raising all our taxes for their socialist agenda and in the end realizing they did not have enough money to cover all there programs. So what do we do... Tax the hard working folks again...

Why not? It's not like anyone is gonna hold them responsible... Not in the liberal bastion that is most of Maryland!!

I can't find anything else on the web about the increase, but if all rates were being doubled I suspect it would have been mentioned in the article and more importantly business groups would be going bonkers.

Oh

Nice try but I was not talking about unemployment... I was talking about his other programs that he did not have enough to pay for...

I should have realized that you were complaining about the Governor's other "socialist" programs in a thread about an unemployment tax increases and in direct response to a post about why this particular tax increase seemed to make sense. Silly me.

Do you honestly believe that they would be doubling the unemployment tax if it was only for unemployment purposes?

I think not!!

Yes

Since the unemployment tax goes directly to pay for unemployment insurance not into the general fund. Of course if you don't believe the reports that are available that show how the fund works, how much the tax brings in and how much is paid out, its not worth trying to argue with you.

I'm trying to understand your point of view here, but let me see if I can help you understand mine.

The unemployment insurance (tax) is based upon a percentage of people's pay, correct? So, there's only a couple of reasons to raise the tax:
  • We weren't taking enough already to provide reasonable payouts to those that have lost their jobs (which doesn't appear to be the case)
  • The unemployment rate suddenly skyrocketed up (which hasn't happened)
  • We want to suddenly increase the benefit so that it is a higher percentage of someone's pay prior to having their job go away (is this it?)
  • Or, the money is going to be used for other programs
I don't know which of the above is true, but since we're talking about a percentage there's no reason it should ever need to change, really.
