Thank you

As a board member for the St. Mary's Animal Welfare League, I want to say thank you to everyone who has shown so much interest in Snowflake. And an extra thank you to those of you who have contributued to his care already. It's going to be a long haul, for Snowflake, but he's a survivor and has the spirit to live.

According to the owner, the horse had not been fed in four days at the time he was seen by the vet. If this was the case with the owner and this horse was "dumped" on him, I wish he'd have taken one of the previous offers to help or at least heeded the warning given by animal control six months ago. Since he chose to willingly turn over Snowflake, he will not be charged just as the case with the pony he agreed to turn over to animal control in 1999. So he is off the hook and Snowflake is safe!

SMAWL is dedicated to giving Snowflake the life that he so much deserves. He will be rehabilitated and offered for adoption when he is well. His picture will be posted with our adoptable pets at www.smawl.org soon.

For those who wish to make a monetary donation, please send it to

SMAWL
PO Box 364
Mechanicsville, MD 20659

and designate that it is for the horse fund.

SMAWL will be sponsoring our First Annual Animal Fair at the St. Mary's County fairgrounds on May 21st. We hope that Snowflake will be well enough to attend and meet some of his many supporters in the community. If not, he will be sending lots of pictures and have a booth of his own for his supporters to learn more about him and his status.

Again, thank you very much to all of you who were supportive and instrumental in getting SMAWL's newest family member to safety. He will be loved and nurtured as the rest of our rescue animals are. If you're looking for any new additions for your family, we have lots of dogs and cats who are already to go to their furever homes. You can meet them at www.smawl.org .

Thanks again,

Thanks for the update, Barbara. It was great to watch this whole saga unfold and see a happy ending for Snowflake. I've already sent a check to help with his care and am looking forward to seeing his progress on his long road to recovery.

Again, thanks to all who helped and made a difference. :yay:

pictures of Snowflake

Thanks Jazz Lady, we appreciate all the help we can get.

I am attaching a couple of pictures of Snowflake the day he arrived at his foster families.

I don't think anyone can question from these photos whether Snowflake was being cared for correctly. Only through his own determination is he still with us.

Snowflake's tail

No, Appyday, SMAWL did not cut his tail off. It was like that when he came. It was cut off because it was full of burrows. There are many more still in there too. We discussed that the summer is going to be awful for him with no tail to chase the flies. He would be happy to have any tail, red, yellow, blue, orange...doesn't matter, just a tail to chase those pesty flies away!!! I took those pictures immediately upon him walking off the Animal Control horse trailer.

He is a very sweet guy and loves having lots of attention. And was thrilled to have new friends at his foster home too. He's SOOOO sweet!!!

In all fairness to the mailman though...this field was so overgrown with brambles that it was nearly impossible to see in it or to even imagine that there might be an animal living in it. It was just by chance that he had waded through them and come to the edge of the fence to be seen by one of the SMAWL board members one day. I think on that day that he decided it was time to ask for help! This board member, who was a major force in getting Snowflake to safety, has driven this same road at least 2x a day for years and was amazed to realize that there was a horse in this field. After she called me, I went out to see and even being told the horse was there had a very difficult time finding him in the jumbled mess.

Please Pm me a name and number where the horse is...I will call...go see him and try to fit him for a tail....
Ok- I am stupid when it comes to horses......... I know why he needs his tail. But I am very curious as to how you would fit him for one. Is it like an extention???

Your too funny!! Nice pictures too! So, what is it? Like a hair extention that you weave into the real tail? Check out the thread I started in dogs this am too! I broke down and got 2 babies!!

Snowflake's blog

You can read Snowflakes story here. His mom is keeping a journal on his days.

Thanks to all of you who have followed Snowflake progress. He is on the mend, but there is no quick fix to this one. I visited him last week and can not believe how much better he looks already.

Also, a HUGE thank you to those of you who have helped or are helping with his many needs, both medically, food, donations, etc. Every little bit helps!

THANK YOU

snowflake

how come snowflakes website hasnt been updated since april? It is now June thought that there would be updates all the time as to how the horse is doing.

Snowflake, now Cincinnati (Cincy for short), is doing well. He is currently living with a 33yo gelding on about 4 acres of grass and getting two square meals with lots of good calories twice a day. His feet are on the mend (the farrier said it would be a while) and the equine dentist has been scheduled. He's learned to be pushy about his food and how to woo the mare that is in heat across the neighboring fenceline. Appyday, he's probably ready for that tail now...he sure looks funny frantically swinging his nub! He has a fly sheet coming, too, and he seems to love his flymask and leg wraps. He's gaining weight and hopes to look like a normal horse this fall...
As soon as I get my head screwed on straight I'll post a few photos - I know everyone (especially the SMAWL board members) are dying to see them.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news...

Snowflake died last night...

:frown: I'm so sorry to hear that. At least he was taken out of that horrible environment and lived out his final days being loved. :huggy:
