I currently work full-time and would love to stay home with my 5 year old, possible work part time while she is in school. I just dont know if hubby and I could make it. He makes pretty good money, but we don't want to be totally broke. I make good money as well but after gas, daycare, I have about 300 left over....any suggestions would be nice.

When I worked outside of the home I usually just waited tables or tended bar at night to have extra money. You can make pretty good money actually and only work a few nights a week.

When my kids were little I:

Sold Avon
Waitressed in the evenings after hubby got home
Bartended on the weekends
Did daycare

Sometimes 2 or 3 of those at once.

Start putting away every single dollar you earn into a savings account. If you can do this for a few months without any problems, you can live on one salary - your hubby's.

Some people, one of the salaries doesn't even cover the house payment..

I say put your faith in Bob.. send me 10% of your income.. pray to me every morning and night.. THEN quit your job, and everything will be fine.

and if everything isn't fine.. we'll blame it on somebody called Steven..

but no matter what, make sure you send me my 10% or it'll only get worse.

:yeahthat: My husband and I are currently doing that as he is thinking about retirement. Just remember to deduct any costs that you would be saving from staying at home such as childcare, lunches out, etc. Also, make sure you can still save a little for emergencies or expenses such as having to buy a car in the future. If you don't have a car payment now remember that some day you may. Don't forget bills that may come once or twice a year such as car or home owners insurance.

Have you worked the whole time since she was born? It just seems odd to me that at the time when your child will be getting ready to head to school full time that you would now choose to stay home. Are considering home schooling?

I have been going back and forth for years but husband got a huge raise and it helps significantly for me to stay home, put her on and get her off the bus. Be there for her.....I would have loved to stay home when she was born but the funds were definately not there

If you can afford to quit and stay home.. keep your job take all your income and invest it, and you can retire when you are 50 or even earlier. Maybe even afford to send her to a good college.

It was the elementary school years I wish I could have been home for the most of all years.

We bit the bullet ten years ago to have my wife be a stay at home mom. It still is not easy living pay check to paycheck but it is by choice. She likes to be home with the kids and am thankful I am to give her the option.
