I kind of thought that as well, but that ball bouncing out may move them back with a loss of the down - it might backfire.

That looks like it should be a TD, or at least a catch on the 1 inch line. I think if it's declared incomplete because he landed funny and the ball finally came out is BS. He definitely had it long enough.

If the defender is on them (and it is a catch), then he must come up with the ball... it will not be ruled a catch.

That might be true, but that's an absolutely terrible rule. He had the ball in his grasp for long enough. Stupid stupid rule.
