Supposedly 66% of NYC wants government grocery stores

We'll see. Certainly I can understand that you have next to nothing in big cities that resemble supermarkets, especially in crime ridden areas that have created "food deserts" and your only options are small bodegas - or going away from the city. Something like a commisary could be a solution.

I guess we'll see, but I have no interest in MY tax dollars going for this. It's not my fault.

There will be no difference.

It’ll just be robbed or closed due to shoplifting.

All of the taxpayer subsidized Military Commissaries that I have been in, are nice and well run.

It's already been mentioned that the customers aren't looters and shoplifters. I'll add that military commissaries aren't overseen by people who can easily skim and take kickbacks.

I'm remembering that grocery stores in Russia were govt run back in the Soviet Union days, and were frequently empty with long lines to get little. Not saying a US run store would be that bad, but it didn't go well for the Russians.

Hmmm ... military styled commissary, run by the military and guarded by the military. Arrests made at the door.

I can see the protesters getting lined up.

Pretty sure MWR runs the exchanges and commissaries, not the military. They do have to answer to the military, of course, but still. There's no NEC or MOS for cashier.

What I suspect will happen in this case, especially with New York and Chicago is that they wouldn't actually be government-run. The government would just write contracts with favored people to run them in return for a take of the grift.

Barracks & Section 8 housing are the same thing. Government provided housing. Except in 1 case, the tenants are held accountable.

Barracks ≠ Section 8 housing.
Commissaries ≠ Government run grocery stores.

And I bet they have a shrink rate that is closer to 1% than 20%.
I would bet against that any day of the week and twice on Sunday. I have personally witnessed more hood rat military dependents in the post exchange and commissary stuffing things in their pants than I have ever noticed in a normal grocery store or box store.

Right but they don't have to make a profit. They're also allowed to use baggers who only work for tips.
And they're in fenced in, well protected MILITARY BASES
Not alot of flash mob looting taking place there, either... not alot of junkies passing out in them either
No pimps...no prostitutes (well...not as many)...
LOTS of gang members...but they all fall under the same leadership on base, so...and they will pull together when necessary...like wartime
The men & women who frequent commissaries aren't the same as the dregs surviving in NYC either
