Surgery

Today my puppy is getting spayed. I just dropped her off at the vet. Going down the list, they offered the Elizabethan collar and I said no. The reason I said no is that I saw a different one at the pet store that is softer and not so cumbersome. With an Elizabethan collar, she'll be banging into everything in the house. Knowing my pup, she'll want to lick the surgery site and I definitely want to keep that from happening. My question, should I have gotten the one the vet offered or is the soft one better? I'm headed out in about an hour to the pet store to pick her up a big old cushy bed (she probably won't use) and a new toy.

When my baby girl was spayed, we didn't need the collar at all. It didn't bother her, or the other pup I had with her at the time.

So you might be able to get away with not using it at all

That would be wonderful, they did tell me that at the vet also.

If the soft one doesn't work, you can always get the vets overpriced one by just calling.

I don't know how big your puppy is, but when I had a cat fixed that wanted to lick the spot, I used a sock, cut the foot out and stuck her in it. When I had my dog fixed, I used a leg warmer. I feel so sorry for them bumping into everything wearing those collars.

Those collars look like some kind of torture device. She's 54 pounds, so she's big already and add the collar on, that leaves no room for her to get around. (Plus she won't like the cats laughing at her).

When I had my girl spade we used the "Lampshade" the first day, she was so miserable with that thing on her neck, we took it off the next day and she was fine. As far as the bed goes, I bought 3 different beds for her that she would sniff, walk around and then look at me like..."wtf, I'm going to sleep in your bed anyway, but if it makes you happy to buy these, cool". I donated them to a shelter. LOL.

I've seen dogs that have the "cone" part of the collar pointed towards the back. That way they don't bump into anything but still can't move their heads far enough to mess with the wound.

I would wait if you could.

I think I will wait and see.

Right now she sleeps on the oriental rug at the foot of my bed. My bed is so high up, she still can't jump up on it. I noticed the other day, lots of white hair in the oriental rug that's really hard to get out with the vacuum and thought a dog bed might be good for both of us.

When one of my dogs has ACL surgery, I had to buy the biggest freakin cone I could find to keep her from not licking her leg. Poor thing was pathetic looking. :lmao: It was so long she couldn't eat or drink with it on. Ran into everything. :frown: But I had to do it.

Poor thing. You'd think there would be a better way.

We had Molly spayed a few months back and knew she'd never leave that martini glass thing on, we used doggie tank top and kept an eye on her...good luck !!

I saw a picture of a sign outside a vet's office not that long ago that said something like "It is all fun and games until one ends up in a cone."

A couple of years ago, we had 3 of our 5 pets in a cone that year.

Cones have never worked for any of my animals. Well Wishes to your Pup! She will be a handful in a few days, and she may want to go for a Dip in that Pool!

Not for two weeks, she's going to lose it, that's been part of her daily routine for the last couple of weeks now.
