Swollen Uvula

My husband woke up around 0330 this morning, saying he felt like he was gagging on something. I looked in his throat and his uvula was swollen. So much so you could hardly see around it. I looked it up on the internet and it says it could be caused by snoring, which he does.

How common is this? I'm pretty sure he's snored all his life. Definitely the 13 years I've known him and it's never happened to him before. He was pretty freaked out about it.

Luckily the cure was pretty simple. Drink something really cold or eat ice cream. He opted for popsicles and after the first one, I did notice the swelling had gone down some. You could atleast see around his uvula.

I was just wondering if anyone else had this experience before.

This same thing has happened to me twice and it terrified me the first time! When I woke up, mine was swollen and it was hard to resist the urge to try swallowing it. So, I got some iced water to drink and let bits of ice rest at the back of my throat. I do snore occasionally and I feel that's the irritation that caused mine.

I've had it happen twice, I was told (not by anyone in the medical field) it's caused by dehydration.

That can also be a cause of it. Smoking, excessive drinking (alcohol), snoring, and dehydration are all possible causes of it. Husband smokes and snores but doesn't drink alcohol. He was snoring last but not any worse than normal.

I had to read the thread title twice.

It sounds like the irritation is caused by his mouth and throat drying out due to breathing through his mouth. I, myself snore and have had similar symptoms. Chloroseptic spray and/or Listerine helps to soothe the irritation and moisten the mouth and throat. So, that one of those might help him when he wakes up. Maybe try it before he goes to bed? Just a thought.....

Has he bothered to try that "Snore No More" or whatever it's called; and maybe those adhesive nose strips to help with the snoring?

I didn't even know the proper name for it but I thought if I wrote about my husband's hangey ball, it would sound even worse. :roflmao:

I have learned something about myself through this thread. I must have a Freudian issue with genitalia because everytime I see the title, I read vulva. I know what it says but my eyes still see vulva! :)

have him gargle with warm salty water. it will shrink it some. then head to the doctor. it happens from time to time and the doc usually prescribes antibotics.

Took the whole thing out. It's weird at first. Swallowing anything is different. Sometimes food would get up in my nose via the back of my throat when swallowing, but as the months go by it gets better.

J.F. A sus ordenes!
Had mine removed for severe obstructive sleep apnea. Now I cant have babies!

I also made the mistake of telling a bunch of retired Navy Chief's that I couldn't swallow like I used to.
