Swollen Uvula

Took the whole thing out. It's weird at first. Swallowing anything is different. Sometimes food would get up in my nose via the back of my throat when swallowing, but as the months go by it gets better.

So, I guess the uvula is like the duodenum; that keeps stomach content in the stomach. It prevents what you swallow from doing what you describe.

My husband woke up around 0330 this morning, saying he felt like he was gagging on something. I looked in his throat and his uvula was swollen. So much so you could hardly see around it. I looked it up on the internet and it says it could be caused by snoring, which he does.

How common is this? I'm pretty sure he's snored all his life. Definitely the 13 years I've known him and it's never happened to him before. He was pretty freaked out about it.

Luckily the cure was pretty simple. Drink something really cold or eat ice cream. He opted for popsicles and after the first one, I did notice the swelling had gone down some. You could atleast see around his uvula.

I was just wondering if anyone else had this experience before.

On a serious note- AHEM-my uvula was removed when they removed my tonsils a few years ago. I had a sleep study and was told I had sleep apnea. Once the ENT saw how bad my tonsils were scarred from infections all my life, he removed my uvula as well. It has caused me no difficulties in swallowing-please no wisecracks- and helped with my snoring and quality of sleep.
Have your husband go to an ears, nose and throat specialist if it continues to bother him.

I'm told it works on all hangey ball things, throats, tonsils, uvulas, vulvas, and probably areolas too.

I'm just glad that only one person on here knows who my husband is or I can just imagine the ribbing he'd be getting over this.
