Thanks.... but like I said, buying it myself is useless when I can't change it myself. Surprisingly, if I showed up with my own oil, they only take off a fraction of the price. They won't just charge me for the labor. Saves me no money. I've tried before.

You say you '.....can't change it myself.' Do you not know how; or do you just not have the tools? All it takes is, a floor jack, two jack stands, an oil filter wrench and a box end wrench that fits the plug in the oil pan.

Wrong, full synthetic doesn't need it every 5,000 miles, it's actually closer to 8-9,000 now. Read GURPS' article. The 3,000 rule really doesn't apply anymore to cars older than like, 2005? I've always changed mine at 5,000 and most shops will back me up on that. I have a nice little sensor now that take all the guess work out and actually tells me the percentage quality of my oil and it's suggested to change it when it hits between 25-15%. For me, that's right around 8,000 give or take.


I used to know how to change the oil for my SUV. I usually had someone around who could do it 10x faster and cleaner than me, so it's been forever since I've done it. This car is newer, different, more cramped in the inside and I no longer have access to these tools OR a place to keep them other than my living room. Maybe if we move and the new place actually has a garage, I'll look into acquiring what I need.


For now, I am just looking for a reputable place that might be a few bucks cheaper than where I'm going :shrug:

What a coinkeedink.....I have one of those too. Just remember to not ignore it. When I replied, I was thinking back to my '97 that I would change oil in every 3,000 miles with a synthetic blend. The new wheels have % meters and 'idiot lights.'
'course, by the time the low oil idiot light comes on, you're pretty much screwed.

5 qt. of Mobil 1 5W-30 High Mileage: $22.66 @ Wally Mart. Add an oil filter of your choice and change oil in your driveway/garage for nowhere near $60-$70.

I get that it's clearly cheaper to change it in my driveway. If I could, I would. However I wanted to see if I was being charged the average amount for someone ele to do it. I'm still trying to figure out why a Honda dealer in CT only charges $30 and down here it's almost $80.

I have free oil changes for life, paid $ 800 for this add on when we bought the 95 Saturn w/99 k from DarCars Chrysler in waldorf

... she now has 205k on the original motor ... they are losing money on me now

Walmart (here) doesn't do synthetic oil changes.

Walmart will do synthetic oil changes. I've gone to them a few times for my BMW. You're lucky the cost is only $70 -- mine average $130. I don't put a lot of miles on my vehicle these days so I can stretch the cost out.

Anyhow, I'm surprised your Honda takes synthetic. My sister has an Accord and I've never heard her mention it needing synthetic oil.

Mercedes several years back, advertised 50,000 between oil changes.. so owners would go in for service at 50 and fill it up with Dino (cheaper) and still try to go 50,000 miles.. when their engines seized they sued Mercedes and won ..

Thought Amsoil used to advertise no lore oil changes.. top off and filters only..

Of course the oil companies DO not want you to go 50k miles.. even though it would make a huge difference to the environment

IMHO if Gas Engines had the same Oil Cap. as diesels [5 gals not 5 qts.] they would go 200k - 300k miles

I use Amsoil in two vehicles - 25,000 or twelve months, oil and filter. Use it on my 2010 F-150 and 2005 VW bug. We come nowhere near the 25,000 by the time 12 months rolls up, and the oil is really not that dirty, and for the last three years have not had to really add any.

Automakers have been upping the capacity over the years though. The wifes 2.5 Jetta takes 6 quarts, the 4.2 in the Trailblazer takes 7. I change every 12-15k miles, or when the OLM light comes on and the truck has 140k miles on it now. The wifes is every 10k recommended by VW. The Avalanche has a digital meter. Seems to be about 7500 miles, still have 27% left according to the OLM.

I will say this, I will never use Mobil one again. I switched to it as a cheaper alternative and my truck has ran like crap since then, decreased fuel mileage and poor idle. I have about 6200 miles on the current change and will change it by 10k or in 3 months. Back to Royal Purple after this. Same goes with the Jetta after the warranty is up and we no longer have to comply with the 505.01 oil spec put out by VW.
