If I'm going to take it out in the garden, guess I'll look for a used one, see how I like it. Would hate to mess up a new one in the mud.

But you have to buy a cover. Don't just take a tablet out and drop it around.
You have to buy a cover, but they are cheap on amazon and even ebay. Once you decide on the tablet you want, cover shopping will be a snap.

I have over 100 books on my iPad TYVM ... Kindle Rocks

But I don't (as a general rule) buy fiction books - that's what a library is for.

Now, reference books, I have HUNDREDS of - cookbooks, gardening, local history, how-to-fix-just-about-anything - I have a collection of fairy tale and mythology books that ROCKS!

Does the library rent ebooks like it does audiobooks?

The library lets you check out ebooks.

However, there are sooooooo many ebooks (especially reference) available for free or for under a buck, why bother checking them out when you can own them.

yeah true, most of the books I buy are less than 5 bucks .... and if I purchase a book, I will re-read it .... I have some books I bought in the 1980's when I was in high school that I have re-read more than 2 doz times

I have one book I finally got on my Kindle I could see EVERY Place the E Version had been edited and updated over the 1980's paper version

but...but...PAPER! Must have paper!
...

Why?
Do you rip out pages and blow your nose or use it for emergency TP?

I got a cheap wifi Pandigital tablet for under $100, added a 32gb micro SD card and it's a lot easier to carry around than a book, or 20 books or 100 books. Kindle has a free classics section where you can download all the books you should read (but never have) for free.

Any other opinions on operating system?

Apple is very simple and "just works" because it is also very limited.

Android is more complicated, but also much more customizable. Don't like the keyboard? Get a different one. Frequently want to know the weather, your schedule, what's happening on Twitter/Facebook, or just about anything else? Just put a widget on one of your home screens and the info is right there when you turn it on. You can even change the "launcher" which can change how the home screens look/operate.

Personally, I like to tweak/personalize, so I like Android. As for which one? They're all starting to blur together. :lmao: Samsung has some good ones, the Nexus 7 is made for Google by ASUS. There should be a new Nexus 7 coming out this summer which would make the current Nexus 7 cheaper or you could get a newer version that is even more capable...if you can wait. Samsung just announced a few more tablets. They have just about ever size you could want: 6" 7" 8" 10" (I think they skipped 9" for now). And they have regular versions and "Note" versions that come with a special pressure-sensitive stylus.

I keep tabs on this site:
OneHundredFreeBooks | Free Bestsellers And Indie Books For Kindle

Although, I HATE the Kindle format! It's locked down so you can only use them with their app...and their app SUCKS! Of course, there are was around that...

Anybody here download college books for classes instead of purchase hardcover? If so, are you happy with doing it that way? What reader (memory size) do you recommend?

I tried doing that on my laptop but it's a PITA.
If you want to highlight and write notes, paper text books still work best

She wants to do it from a reader designed specifically to support highlighting, bookmarking, searching, etc. Your opinion on downloading to laptop is valuable, thank you. I would also like opinions for those who've done it with readers.
