Teaching Jobs?

Hi All,
This is my first time posting. We are moving to California in about 4 months and I am currently looking for an elementary school teaching job. I was hoping someone could tell me what the job outlook is for the upcoming school year. Are teachers needed? Is there a lot of competition for jobs? I have applied to St. Mary's County and Calvert County school districts. Any input would be appreciated! Thanks so much in advance!

With the growth here anyone who is certified can get a teaching job. You shouldn't have any problem as long as your qualifications and certifications are current unless you specialize in something unusual.

Calvert pays a little better than St. Mary's, and the school system has a better reputation. Most St. Mary's schools are fine though, so you should be able to find something you'll like.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info and for making me feel more encouraged! It's tough being a military wife and having to switch jobs so often (I'm sure many people in the area can relate) so it's always nervewracking to see what the job opportunities are. I'll wait to hear back from both counties and hope for the best! thanks again!

I don't know, but check your PM box and start a new thread, you'll get more answers that way.

I would recommend teaching in the county that you live in due to a ridiculous backup every afternoon trying to get across the Thomas Johnson Bridge. The pay has also recently been increased in St. Marys and is now comparable to Calvert. As far as I am concerned St. Marys would be a better fit if your husband is military and is going to be stationed at PAX. The best way to get hired by St. Marys is to speak to the person in charge of teacher recruitment to find out about specific job openings. PM me if you need additional info.

DA BEARS!!!
Even though you sent your application and resume to the BOE. You should also look at the directories for all the elementry schools and send your resume directly to the principal, it's a good way to get in the door. Worked for a couple of people I know.

Be careful

Our county is desperate to hire new teachers:

1) Maryland's retirement systems sucks for new teachers
2) The kids are extremely out of control, and block scheduling is destroying any
type of instruction in the middle schools. I know, trust me.
3) Look in today's newspaper. The fight that was reported at Stone is one of many, many, many out of control fights that occur in either the middle or high schools in the county. Even in middle school, kids bring knives to school assault teachers, administrators, etc. Because of the policitally correct knuckleheads in the county, these animals are not manhandled as they should be.

Check with PTO's, PTA's, and parents of any school that you apply to. At just one middle school, there are over twenty some teachers leaving because of the out of control behavior of these kids and the lack of support from the administration due to parents threatening lawsuits.

Advice: Get a job in NY or PA if you can. The schools are FAR better!

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately my husband is being relocated to PAX and we are already having a house built in Wildewood (California, MARYLAND) ;) and I don't want too long of a commute.

I currently teach 4th grade in a school that sounds similar to the ones you are describing. I am more of a drill sergeant than a teacher and I break up fights all the time... so as much as it sucks, I am used to it. I really just want to find *something* to get my foot in the door, and then if I'm unhappy after a year, I can always look at other schools.

Question-would anyone recommend any specific schools to try for? Like I said before, I've applied to Calvert and St. Mary's County and am in the process of mailing out my resume to each individual school as well, but in the chance that I hear back from more than one, are there a few good ones/bad ones that I should be aware of? All opinions are welcome. Thanks again everyone!
