The Army just got dumber

The U.S. Army recruited more than 2,600 soldiers under new lower aptitude standards this year, helping the service beat its goal of 80,000 recruits in the throes of an unpopular war and mounting casualties.

So what does this say about of military? Just let our enemies know we are sending dumber soldiers into their grasp.

They're doing more than you. When did you last contribute to society?

...'perspective' mean anything to you? This amounts to 4% of the total, up from last years 2%. That means some 80,000 met the old standard.

How about the test numbers themselves? How good a test taker does someone need to be before they can mend tents? Drive a truck? Serve SOS?Pull a trigger? Volunteer to serve their country?

Have you taken the ASVAB? How well did you score? You wrote 'about of military' instead of 'our'. Does this make you, dumber, perhaps unfit to post? What should you be disparaged about in relationship to your score or grammatical skills vs. your true abilities?

Perspective. How many great soldiers has this nation passed over who might not be the worlds greatest with paper and pencil?

Slaphappy… It says to me we still have a bunch of folks that understand the meaning of sacrifice for their country even in the midst of war. I believe our “dumbest” soldiers are far smarter than the smartest of our enemy. Your attitude shows your lack of intellect regarding indefinable bravery of those willing to die for this country.

Lowering the standards just means that Bush needs more retarded human shields.
This has to be one of the most sub-juvenile statements I think I've ever seen. Please note Coventry said "Bush needs MORE retarded human shields", as if to imply there are already some. I consider this to be a spit in the face of everyone brave man and woman serving.

I must be spitting in my own face then. I've got 14 years of service and counting.

The problem is NOT that we're not getting enough recruits. The problem is the recruits we're getting don't know rabbit turds from Rice Krispies. The standards should be raised, not lowered. You can accomplish more with fewer people if those people have a clue.

The first thing I thought when I saw this thread title was, "Why? Did you join?"

I'm disappointed in those of you who are calling these enlistees "retarded" and "dumb". A low ASVAB doesn't mean the recruit is an idiot - it could mean they just don't test well or don't have an aptitude in the given subjects. The military also won't take anyone who is physically handicapped - even minor flaws that wouldn't preclude a person from being a good soldier.

I don't think anyone should be excluded from serving their country. The kid that bags the groceries at the Giant could easily sweep floors or clean latrines for the Navy.

I think that I'd like it to be a requirement to vote. (let the red karma begin) :flowers:
