The complicated Murdaugh story unraveled

More suggestion that this poor kid was murdered; there was a coverup; the Murdaugh family and local police were involved, and maybe the local Medical Examiner too.

NewsNation's Ashleigh Banfield reports exclusive details regarding Stephen Smith's death. Michael Duncan, a former S.C. Highway Patrol supervisor, weighs in.

Not conclusive at this point that Buster was involved, but brothers Randy and Alex were at least involved in the coverup, if not the murder itself. However, the 'rumors' that have been floating around are that the Buster and Stephen had a sexual relationship. Lots of room for speculation at this point.

Police have been saying that, during the search warrant execution at the house, they found something related to the Smith murder which substantiates re-opening the investigation. Time will tell if they really did or if this is just subterfuge to try to coverup their original coverup. As in, "Oh yeah, we found something that totally changes our opinion about what we originally thought was a hit and run." The eyes of the world are now upon them demanding justice.

For whatever reason, authorities released non-privileged phone calls from Alex in Jail to whomever he called. Not sure why these are allowed to be in public domain, but they give some real insight into what this guy was really like.

Here's one which is narrated by a news editor:

There are many recordings available on Youtube that are 100% just the recordings if you want to fish through them. Reportedly, one privileged call between Alex and his lawyer was released by accident and is now out in the wild. The attorney complained in court, but the cat was out of the bag by then. Some argue that it was Alex's fault that they were not identified as a call to his lawyer.

The Stephen Smith (SS) murder is a whodunnit case on steroids. I found a few more videos by some people who really did their research and present a good overview of what is know so far. This first guy lives in nearby Charleston. He did a records request from the state for everything known about the investigation so far. He plays a lot of actual telephone interviews between the investigators and various leads as the story develops.

TLDR;
  • The presenter develops 4 theories about whodunnit:
    • Buster Murdaugh and 2 of his buddies
    • a 40ish gay guy who Stephen was 'friends' with.
    • Some guy he met through a Craigslist meetup (police confirmed he was doing this kind of stuff)
    • A local boy the same age group as the Murdaugh boys and known to each other. Story is he was driving drunk that night and hit something with his mirror. Went back the next day to discover the police on the scene.
  • The 2nd and 3rd theories don't stand up to scrutiny IMO.
  • Right after the murder, rumors were spreading that Buster and 2 friends were driving around smashing mailboxes, came upon the victim and hit him in the head with a baseball bat as they drove past. Pathologist confirmed that this could be possible cause of death. 40ish guy tells police he spoke with SS after he ran out of gas and SS told he was being harassed by some guys in a pickup truck.
  • SS sister and others say they knew of no animosity between Buster and SS and say that Buster killing him made no sense.
  • SS sister says that there was no known sexual relationship between SS and Buster and those rumors started after the murder.
  • About 5 months after the murder, investigators received a tip saying it was Buster and 2 friends in a truck and they hit him with a baseball bat. Police interviewed one of the people named. He claimed he knew nothing about that. I think police should have interviewed him in person, not via phone so they could judge his body language. There was no further information released about police regarding subsequent interviews with Buster or the other guy. So, we don't know if interviews took place and have not been released, or the alternative.
  • Two days after that tip, police received another tip saying it was the boy identified as theory #4 above. The tipster told police that Randy Murdaugh told him to make the call.
  • Someone is wrong here. Are stories about it being Buster being spread to throw suspicion from the real killer or vice versa? After watching the videos, I have no idea other than it seems likely that either #1 or #4, or maybe some combination of them is correct.
  • The police say they found related evidence in the Murdaugh home during the execution of the search warrant related to the double homicide. Was it the baseball bat or is this just a story to throw off the suspect in theory #4?
Another video worthy watching below. This lady bases her presentation on a letter SS mother wrote to the FBI asking for help to get this solved.

TLDR;
  • Mother says police told her to pretend it was a hit-and-run so not to tip off the killer(s).
  • Randy Murdaugh (Alex's bro) called the day after the murder to offer his gratis services to act as intermediary between the family and investigators. Several days later he ghosted them when they tried to contact him. Family had no idea why he wanted to help them or how he found about it so quickly.
  • SS was beaten so badly that they had to use putty for reconstruction of the left side his face for the funeral.
  • SS mentioned to friends and his sister several times that he was involved with someone in the area who was from a prominent family. If true, it makes no sense as to why the sister would tell the investigator in the above videos that he was not involved with Buster. At the very least you would think she would mention this tidbit here, even if she didn't know it was Buster for sure.
  • Numerous other details and allegations in the video. Worth a watch.
At this time it seems that investigators have a pretty good idea whodunnit and it is now a matter of proving it (now that there is no way to hide behind corruption or political influence). The drunk driver mirror story sounds hard to believe because it was a lone country road at night. Surely SS would have seen/heard the truck coming and either would have tried to flag it down or stepped off the road to not get hit. Investigators also said that there are few signs of being hit by a vehicle, e.g. his loosely tied shoes were still on his feet and no major abrasions from hitting the road.
