The Demise of Twinkies? Yes, It’s True. Parasitic Unions Kill Their Hosts (or, in this case, Hostess)

Back in September, following acceptance by the Teamsters. the bakers’ union (BCTGM) at bankrupt Hostess brands—makers of the iconic Twinkies, Ding Dongs and Wonder brand breads—rejected a company proposal to help keep the company in business. By a voice vote of its members, the union opened the door to conduct a company-killing strike and potentially putting 18,500 Hostess workers onto the streets.

Well, on Friday, the bakers’ union called its members on strike nationwide. Now the job cuts begin.

On Monday, Hostess permanently closed three of its plants, thanks to the union’s strike:

Hostess Brands permanently closed three bakeries Monday, including a plant in St. Louis where 365 jobs were cut, in response to a bakers’ union strike that started Friday.

The bankrupt maker of Twinkies and Wonder bread said it’s trying to avert liquidating the entire company, and it shuttered three plants that were no longer able to produce and deliver products because of picket lines. The other plant closures are in Seattle and Cincinnati, where a combined 262 jobs were cut.

“We deeply regret this decision, but we have repeatedly explained that we will close facilities that are no longer able to produce and deliver products because of a work stoppage — and that we will close the entire company if widespread strikes cripple our business,” Hostess CEO Gregory Rayburn said in a statement.

good I hope the entire company goes under, putting them ALL out of work

Ex-Stella D'oro factory workers are crumbled to bits, still looking for jobs

They shouted, "No contract, no cookies" on the picket line and watched their union jobs crumble away.

A year and a half since the Bronx's iconic Stella D'oro bakery shut its doors following a bitter strike, the former workers are still struggling.

At least 100 of the 135 people who baked Italian cookies and breadsticks at the Kingsbridge factory until they lost their jobs in July 2009 remain out of work, said Mike Filippou, who was Stella D'oro's lead mechanic.

Filippou, of Throgs Neck, was shop steward for the Bakery, Confectionary, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union at the factory and led the year-long strike.

"People are living on unemployment. ... They can't pay their rent," said Filippou, a Greek immigrant. "They were chasing the American dream and it became a nightmare."

Founded in 1932 by an Italian immigrant, Stella D'oro became a labor movement flashpoint in 2008 when the factory's owner, the Connecticut-based private equity firm Brynwood Partners, demanded the workers there accept wage and benefit cuts.

Instead, the workers struck. They scored a victory in July 2009, when a National Labor Relations Board judge ruled Brynwood had negotiated in bad faith.

But rather than accept the workers back under their old contract, Brynwood sold Stella D'oro to Lance Inc., which moved production to Ohio.

Filippou sympathizes with the public employees who lost their collective bargaining rights in Wisconsin, sparking a fierce national debate about labor and the economy.

"I asked for a day off to go to Wisconsin," he said. "I wanted to support them.

"We didn't bring the economy down. That was the banks. That was Goldman Sachs. We're just working people."

I joined the fed gov service a few years ago after retiring from the military. I have to attend mandatory supervisory courses which involve union relations. I just sit there and shake my head in disbelief saying how do we get anything accomplished with unions involved.

-I didn't give Johnny an award this year because he just barely did his job as others went above and beyond. Johnny files a grievance, now we got to give him an award?!

-Johnny wants to telecommute every day and I say no. He files grievance now he gets to telecommute every other day?

-Every meeting I have with staff I'm advised to call HR to have the union be present?

-I heard MANY more scenarios during the classes that were unbelievable.

Luckily, I'm in a national security position and the union does not apply to me and my immediate staff. :yahoo:

a couple of yrs ago I was doing a contract JOB for the National Treasury Employees Union ..... at the downtown HQ.

during the course of my JOB I was asked along with one of the staff IT Employees, to talk to one of the attnys trying to keep an Fed Gov Employee from being fired.

this woman had been warned on numerous occasions about surfing PORN at the office, the employees boss had firewall logs, IP's detailing all of the employees web surfing habits - the mildest of which was

'Fisting Lesbians'

the Attny was unfamiliar with the technology involved ... firewalls, content filters, web caching servers .... etc

the other guy and I took one look at the evidence, and immediately suggested they cut any deal they could, sex addiction whatever, otherwise the woman should be left go, the evidence was very conclusive

here was someone OBVIOUSLY guilty who had been warned on numerous occasions, and the UNION was still trying to protect her, even with all the hard evidence ....

I left shaking my head, sometimes you have to CUT People loose ..... but UNIONS will NOT allow the bad to dismissed

what was the story ...

... teachers, a school system could not let back in the classroom for one reason or another, collecting high salaries sitting int the teachers lounge all day, because the UNION will not let the School Board get RID of them

How the hell long were their employees on strike?

If it was so long that they had to shut down, I would've fired them all and hired new ones -- lots of people looking for jobs out there.

Illegal for them to do that...or they probably would have.

I hated working for a union when I did. It had it's advantages but there were many more disadvantages.

My bosses always complained that they couldn't promote people or step up pay based on who was best for the job and had to based on "seniority" instead.

Getting at least a two years supply!
I know it's been at least 10 years since I've purchased Twinkies. Daughter just told me I need to get a box for her to keep hidden in her room. I said, "I haven't bought you a Twinkie since you were little why would I bother getting you a box now?" She said, " I can make the supply last! Their shelf-life is years and years, Mom!" :twitch:
