The dreaded late night call

Poor thing. Glad it wasn't worse. Did she call you or did someone else? At least when you get "that call" and it's them you know they're still alive and your heart doesn't hammer as hard.

She called Daddy crying about ruining the car.

Good, so you didn't have too bad of a heart attack. :huggy: The worst calls start out with, "Mr. DoWhat, this is Deputy So-and-So..." They should start those calls with, "First of all, she's fine" before they even say hello or identify themselves.

That would suck.
Actually DidWhat answered the phone, I was sleeping.
DidWhat came up stairs and woke me up saying LittleWhat was in an accident.
Waking up to that got my heart beating.
But I was able to talk to the little one and let her know that we will take care of everything.
She didn't know what to do.

Glad the only harm is the vehicle. Darn shame a fender bender like that totals a car. They sure make them cheap these days.

Make them cheap? Not really. Newer much lighter cars have vastly safer passenger cages than the venerable old massive lead sleds of the olden days.

DoWhat,

Glad your girl is okay. Be thankful it wasn't worse. How fast did you make it to Baltimore?

What Blister said. Not much point in having a reparable car if the person inside takes much greater impact loads and more injury.

DW glad to hear she's okay. Our girl drives and even with all the training, sometimes life comes at you fast, so any parent of a driver worries.

Wasnt someone the other day asking what a dashcam is good for?

I'm also glad that no one was injured, should have said that before.

I had one of mine roll one of our hand me down Subaru's.
No serious injuries in an accident that likely would have been fatal in the 60's/70's cars that I drove in a sometimes less than prudent and safe manner.

Hopefully I am not a bad parent.
I didn't go up there until Friday, accident happened Wednesday night.
She had her friend show up at the scene and took her to the ER just to get checked out.

Hell yeah, you're a terrible parent. :lmao:

Once you know that they aren't going in to surgery there is no real need to see your kid at all. :yay:

She's an adult. I'm assuming that if she needed you there for any reason, she'd have said so or you'd have known and would have gone up there ASAP. Since she was fine, her friend was with her, and she was being taken care of, there was no reason for you to go rushing up.

I vote "not a bad parent".

Exactly! In fact, I vote "Parent who did a great job raising a self-sufficient young adult"...

In My Opinion

Its totaled for 2 reasons.
1 the airbags went off.
2 they total after the fix amount goes over 75% of value. and with that hit the doors and airbags might not total the car, but looking at it, if the side post is bent, then the hidden costs go well over their fix limit, so even if it could be fixed under their limit, they wont because until the doors are pulled, you just dont know what else you will run into.

I suspect from just the pictures that the side post did bend.

Glad she is ok.

How do they figure out the value of the car?
It was a 2010 Toyota Corolla S with about 45,000 miles on it.

Glad your daughter is ok and no, you're not a bad parent. She was ok so there was no reason for you to drive up there immediately.

As for how they determine the value....they use fair market value. In other words, they determine how much a similar vehicle sells for in her area. They take into account mileage, condition before accident, etc. They don't use blue book value. A vehicle is generally considered a total loss if the damage amount is 75% of the value or more. Frame damage and deployed air bags can get the damage estimate up there pretty quickly.
