The Loneliness Epidemic

I've always been one who liked to know my neighbors and get to know a lot of folks in my little community. Was that way growing up on a farm in farm country 50 years ago too.

But now my hood is being taken over by come-downers with lots of money and no social graces. It's changing...a lot.
The whole county is getting like that. They come down , but they don't contribute to the community.

The latest nonsense..a bunch of the come-downers have organized to file a protest with DNR over the proposed lease of oyster bottom in the water along the front their homes are on. As if it was "their" water.

Something similar happened near my home town. A bunch of summer residents claimed the beach in front of their cottages were theirs and no one was allowed to walk there, in spite of MHT right of way. Believe it or not, they actually won in court and had all traffic in front of their cottages stopped.

I am not so happy with oyster bottom leases of oyster bottom that used to be free for anyone to use myself.
It seems that certain people are getting more than their share of the leases.
I know that where I used to go out and get a mess I now have to seek and find oyster bottom far from my home.
I understand the problem of the natural oysters dying off, and I also understand that the plants do not propagate and the natural grounds are sanded over., Not sure making one or two lease holders have the rights to the bottom is the correct answer.

on another note.....didnt 1930's Germany huddle some people together, "huddled masses" to destinations like quickly constructed warehouse with a fortified security system, transportation to "showering" facilities, mass transit....etc?

Would OUR governemnt do that?
They did do that. Read up on the Japanese American internment during WW2.

?? DNR has been managing thousands of bottom leases for many decades. They let a large number of new ones every year. It's nothing but good for the affected bottom if, and I do say if because some leased bottoms just sits there untouched, the lease holder works the bottom as intended.

There has been some controversy regarding their more recent "lottery leases" where a larger area will be designated as protected and managed oyster bottom with many watermen buying a "share right" to get a crack at the bottom when DNR decides to open it. I don't know of a single waterman that made any money on that scheme and I know some didn't recover their investment.

I'm surprised they aren't jarred by the rusty machinery and cardboard windows.

There have always been leases on private bottom . My father had one many years ago, but there were also public oyster grounds.
Oyster bars open to the public where licensee's could go. Of course the disease came and killed most of the natural oysters, and many of these grounds sanded over. Then along came the new plants. The ones that HAVE to be planted because they don't propagate on their own. Most men who made their living on the water crabbing and oystering had to find other jobs.
Somebody must be making a dollar off of paying the State to plant these oysters, if they were all losing money they would be stupid to keep it up.

There are still plenty of open. I get almost all my oysters from several local guys that have no bottom leases.

I've yet to see much evidence that all the money the state has spent on trying to grow the oyster population has done much. A lot of it has definitely been wasted in the past. Paying to have empty shell returned to known productive bottom seems to be helping..but their larger spat-on-shell projects never amounted to much.

The oysters will never return until natural spat returns.

? Last years harvest was amazing. Natural bottom harvest I'm talking about. They are recovering quite nicely all on their own. There is evidence that the shell dumping helps by providing a place for the natural spat to anchor.

When I worked at an oyster farm up north, that was SOP, to provide old shell bits in the bay for the natural spawns. Populations increased every year.

I've been dumping oyster shells off my pier for years. Something worked. All oyster season the boats were on that spot. I hope they made that money.
