The Mystery of Global Warming's Missing Heat

The Mystery of Global Warming's Missing Heat : NPR
Some 3,000 scientific robots that are plying the ocean have sent home a puzzling message. These diving instruments suggest that the oceans have not warmed up at all over the past four or five years. That could mean global warming has taken a breather. Or it could mean scientists aren't quite understanding what their robots are telling them.
...
In fact, 80 percent to 90 percent of global warming involves heating up ocean waters.
...
Since the system was fully deployed in 2003, it has recorded no warming of the global oceans.

"There has been a very slight cooling, but not anything really significant," Willis says.
Well, I guess when you operate under the assumption that Global Warming is a reality, that would be confusing...

It really boils down (no pun, there) to the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 80's. A significant number of temperature measuring stations in the Siberian tundras were allowed to go offline due to funding problems. However, the global temperature models were never modified to take into account all those sub-zero temperatures disappearing from the readings. All of a sudden, the winters were warmer and the environmental-Nazis took this is an opportunity to stick it to the industrialized nations. There's alot more that's outlined in Christopher Horner's book The Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming

The missing heat is inside the expanding balloon that poses as ALBORE's very large carbon-footprinted head.

It's also expanding his bank accounts.

So then its Regans fault

Well, somebody better tell the Ad Council because every other commercial on the radio is "I'm getting a bicycle...I'm getting melted polar ice caps..."

:roflmao:

BTW, I am curious about the sea level rise that the article mentions. I'm wondering how they measure that.

Here's a little thermodynamics fer ya... Suppose you've got an ice-water solution in a highball glass. The initial temperature of the water in the solution is 32*F. After 30 minutes, let's say half of the ice remains... what is the temp of the water? Answer: still 32*F. After an hour, there is only a tiny smidgen of ice remaining... what is the temp of the water? Answer: still 32*F.

As long as there is ice in the mixture, the ice will serve as a heat sink for any heat that enters the solution. So it really shouldn't come as a surprise that the ocean temps remain relatively constant, because the heat entering the oceans is transferred into the (melting) ice caps. When the ice caps are gone, lookout - no more buffer - and ocean temps are free to rise.

And if anyone cares to follow the original link, you'll see it notes that scientists have observed record heat over earth's landforms, as well as rising ocean levels.

But nice job cherry-picking the factoids from the science!

Maybe you should email them and tell them that you've solved their mystery :yay:

More on Dr. Josh Willis' study (the basis of the NPR report):

"Update as of 5/30/07: Recent analyses have revealed that results from some of the ocean float and shipboard sensor data used in this study were incorrect. As a result, the study's conclusion that the oceans cooled between 2003 and 2005 can not be substantiated at this time. The study authors are currently working to correct these data errors and recompute ocean temperature changes."

JPL.NASA.GOV: News Releases

I see 1 scientist with compromised data, not any evidence that the ice caps aren't shrinking (it's well documented that they are), or that temperatures over land masses aren't increasing (it's well documented that they are), or that sea levels aren't rising (it's well documented that they are).

Really? Increasing?

Twelve-month long drop in world temperatures wipes out a century of warming
All four major global temperature tracking outlets (Hadley, NASA's GISS, UAH, RSS) have released updated data. All show that over the past year, global temperatures have dropped precipitously
A compiled list of all the sources can be seen here. The total amount of cooling ranges from 0.65C up to 0.75C -- a value large enough to wipe out most of the warming recorded over the past 100 years. All in one year's time. For all four sources, it's the single fastest temperature change ever recorded, either up or down.

It would seem you're misinformed. Well documented............

Wow, you're really invested in this global warming hoax, aren't you? Is that you, Al Gore?

The opposite of your claims above are well documented as well. But don't let that stand in your way. :yay:

1 year is not a trend, Mr. Cherrypicker.

Why should a little thing like truth get in the way when opinion and folly are so much fun? Besides, the Nobel committee and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have just got to be smarter than that inconvenient thermometer.

I guess President Bush is wrong about global warming, too.
from NPR interview w/ Bush Jan 29, 2007

MR. WILLIAMS: Now, also in the State of the Union, you talked about the – quote here – “the serious challenge of global climate change.” Were you talking about global warming there?

PRESIDENT BUSH: Absolutely, and it’s a serious challenge. And one of the things that I am proud of is this administration has done a lot on advancing new technologies that will enable us to do two things – strengthen our economy, and at the same time, be better stewards of the environment. In 2002, I talked about an energy efficiency standard, which says new technologies will enable us to grow our economy, and at the same time, improve the environment, and we’re meeting certain standards that I set for the country.

Yes, he is. Just as with Al Gore, you should never get your scientific data from a politician. They will tell you what they think you want to hear. The GW bandwagon has gotten so popular that Bush has to jump on. He's a weasel and coward for doing it, but what's new?

Could you please tell me why people driving SUVs in the US is causing the temperature on Mars to rise?

Why is a one year increase in temperature statistically significant to you, but a similar decrease is not?

Ask Kerad or Forrestal is Bush is wrong

Aren't the ice caps currently the largest they have been since they started measuring them?

:gossip: which has only been about 30 years and that doesn't qualify as a geological pimple

Well, considering that a WWII pilot who was lost was just found now that the ice/snow covering him has melted...
