the problem w/ restaurants isn't the ideas...people have good ideas for restaurants every day....the problem is staffing and mgmt. and being able to handle the rush...they go under or fail because of bad mgmt or just not being able to handle the crowds, or they just have no idea the commitment it takes to make it work and then want out

You make a good point, but our point isn't "what keeps a restaurant open" so much as what we would like a real dining experience to be. Any business requires commitment and smart management.

No keno, no big screen. I would strategically place a couple of decent sized flat screens at the bar, though.

How you treat your staff goes a long way toward what type of employees you'll attract. If they're treated like professionals instead of McDonald's cashiers, they'll make you rich.

:yeahthat: The atmosphere of the restaurant is much more than the tables and furnishings. The waitstaff makes or breaks it. Some of the most memorable restaurants I've ever been so because of the care and attention from the staff, regardless of the "fancyness" of the restaurant. In New Orleans, we stopped at some dive-looking restaurant and had the most glorious meal prepared fresh for us with attentive service...at 2 in the morning! :yay:

That's a stupid thing to say. Do you understand how per diem works? You are given an amount per diem (day). If you spend it, fine. If you don't, you keep it. If you go over, that's out of your own pocket. If he ate every meal at McDonalds, or every meal at the Tides, the impact on your taxes is the same. Get over it.

Thanks for explaining that. I'm not on per diem anyway, just have some sympathy for those that are.

And to the same on one who posted that dumb comment:
And who called who a Hick??? And..Sorry about the "lively" comment but it seems that things change a bit when I cross the bridge. If there is something to do in the evening then I'm missing it and would honestly like to know what it is. That is if it could suggested without being stupid about it.

What???

Why should our choice of restaurants be dictated by outsiders who are trying to strech their "per diem"? We who live and pay our taxes in St. Mary's County deserve to have decent restaurants. If the people we allow to visit want to eat a decent meal, they can use their "per diem" to supplement what they would normally pay for their meal at home.
Only got to the original Tides once, was very good. I think their problem was lack of advertising. New chef wants it to be like Ruth's Chris. Well, then get a Ruth's Chris here. No matter what Sean Hannity says, Ruth's Chis is overrated.

Who's dictating???? Suggesting you give it another try, that's all. Not sure I understand the rest of the garble you put into that message about stretching per diem.

Hey Kirk, you sound like you're gonna' kirk out any minute now.

Kirk, out.

Cute, very cute. One of the better comments. I mean it. I'm not going to get personal. I just think everyone who has had a bad experience at the Tides should give it another chance. I'll be there next week. Till then, as you say: KIRK OUT!!!!!!

Oh I understand all too well how it works, perhaps more than you. I understand some enjoy taking advantage of the system and pocketing the change. Why not get reinbursed for just what you spend rather than taking trips with the intent to make extra money? Don't you have to turn in receipts for actual expenses? I bet you don't. A bit dishonest? I think so. Before you accuse me of saying something else "stupid", I am a certified fraud investigator with over 20 years as a federal investigator and really tired of Government workers taking "trips" and making extra income as a result. (Before you say it, I always turned in my itimized expenses and broke even on all my trips.) It is a shame that you feel that screwing the Government is OK by taking advantage of the per diem system. Perhaps an audit of your expenses would be in order. Feel comfortable with that prospect?

...and no I will not "Get over it." Someone has to be the gatekeeper.

I usually side with you on your opinions, but you can count me out on this one.

Dear Gatekeeper,

can you please do something about the dead wood in the government? I'm tired of my tax dollars paying people to pick their nose 40 hours a week.

Love,

You're kidding, right?

They spend days, sometimes weeks, away from their families, and you don't think they deserve to keep their whole per diem?? Living in hotels, eating at restaurants...this is not as fun as someone who rarely does it would think.

Besides, I'm all for "screwing the government" if you can do it legally. The government sure doesn't mind screwing me - why should I worry about them?

Well, since you put it like that....:lmao:

Anyway, ya' know what burns my chaps? The pussy whipped husband who's always whining "My wife won't let me go on travel", so my husband (and others) have to take up their slack and travel more. Pull your weight, ya' big fn sissy.

Oh please oh great one, educate me.

Don't you have to turn in receipts for actual expenses? I bet you don't.

If you know so much, why do you ask? The laws are in place. I turn in receipts in accordance with the JTR.

A bit dishonest? I think so.
You are not qualified to think, so don't try.

really tired of Government workers taking "trips" and making extra income as a result.
While there is a small amount of fraud and boondoggles going on, your assumption that we're all trying to get rich is insulting. Believe me, I'd rather be at home and comfortable than being in cattle car class, on a full flight, with 24 hours in transit.

(Before you say it, I always turned in my itimized expenses and broke even on all my trips.)
Oh goody for you. The government has decided that is a stupid way of doing business. Under your system, you turn in a receipt for your $10 breakfast. Somebody has to look at the receipt and determine if the expense is valid. If they don't think so, they call you for an explanation. Then they want a memo explaining the cost. That's all manhours. If it costs you $40 in labor to save the government $2, what have you gained?

It is a shame that you feel that screwing the Government is OK by taking advantage of the per diem system.
Show me one instance where I took screwed the government. If they ask me to travel for them, give me strict rules, and I follow them, how is that taking advantage of the system?

Perhaps an audit of your expenses would be in order. Feel comfortable with that prospect?
If you were anywhere near as knowledgeable as you claim, you would know that audits of my expenses are required. I am completely comfortable with that because I have access to the JTR, and I comply. Your inane babel is pathetic.

...and no I will not "Get over it." Someone has to be the gatekeeper.
Okay, I'll amend that to say get over your bad self. There is a gatekeeper. Audits are done. People are fired and go to jail. You have picked a fight about something you know nothing about.

I usually side with you on your opinions, but you can count me out on this one.
Proves my point.

The bottom line is, there is a system in place. Per Diem rates are set based on the cost of living in the area of travel. Let's use the Pax River M&IE rate of $39 as an example.

Breakfast - IHOP Linda's. $10.

Lunch - Monterey, Asahi, etc. $10.

Dinner - Lonestar, Outback, Appleby's etc. at least $20. Add a glass of wine or two and watch out.

Now you are in a strange town. What to do. Should I sit in the room and watch the tube all night? Maybe I want to catch a movie? ($15)

If I were at home, breakfast and dinner would be made at home, and I'd take my lunch to work. Entertainment would consist of spending time with my kids. Just a little bit cheaper.

M&IE covers the gap between your normal cost of living and the added cost of being away from home. Nobody gets rich off of it.

We have people like that, and they were allowed to get away with it. Then we had a management change, and these guys are now going places like Bahrain. They were told that if they refused their share of travel, they could find another job. :yay:

When I was new at this, there were guys who would turn down the trips to places like Norfolk, Philly, or New Jersey because they didn't like the places. I'd take whatever came along. The picky travellers were the first ones to cry when I got trips to Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, and Sicily. My boss said "he takes the s**t trips, so he gets the good ones too." Best boss I ever had.
