Oh I understand all too well how it works, perhaps more than you. I understand some enjoy taking advantage of the system and pocketing the change. Why not get reinbursed for just what you spend rather than taking trips with the intent to make extra money? Don't you have to turn in receipts for actual expenses? I bet you don't. A bit dishonest? I think so. Before you accuse me of saying something else "stupid", I am a certified fraud investigator with over 20 years as a federal investigator and really tired of Government workers taking "trips" and making extra income as a result. (Before you say it, I always turned in my itimized expenses and broke even on all my trips.) It is a shame that you feel that screwing the Government is OK by taking advantage of the per diem system. Perhaps an audit of your expenses would be in order. Feel comfortable with that prospect?

...and no I will not "Get over it." Someone has to be the gatekeeper.

I usually side with you on your opinions, but you can count me out on this one.

Hey gatekeeper,

You are a certified bag of suck!! You should see the sweet boat I bought with all the "extra" money I made from "screwing" the government. You’re probably right, we need more no-load bean counters working for the government to check itemized food receipts… what an asshat!
Have you read the JTR? No...Here it is

A military member is on duty 24/7, can be called away from family and die for their country. Per diem is a drop in the bucket....

And my son is building a chopper with his extra :huggy:

Oh please oh great one, educate me.

If you know so much, why do you ask? The laws are in place. I turn in receipts in accordance with the JTR.

You are not qualified to think, so don't try.

While there is a small amount of fraud and boondoggles going on, your assumption that we're all trying to get rich is insulting. Believe me, I'd rather be at home and comfortable than being in cattle car class, on a full flight, with 24 hours in transit.

Oh goody for you. The government has decided that is a stupid way of doing business. Under your system, you turn in a receipt for your $10 breakfast. Somebody has to look at the receipt and determine if the expense is valid. If they don't think so, they call you for an explanation. Then they want a memo explaining the cost. That's all manhours. If it costs you $40 in labor to save the government $2, what have you gained?

Show me one instance where I took screwed the government. If they ask me to travel for them, give me strict rules, and I follow them, how is that taking advantage of the system?

If you were anywhere near as knowledgeable as you claim, you would know that audits of my expenses are required. I am completely comfortable with that because I have access to the JTR, and I comply. Your inane babel is pathetic.

Okay, I'll amend that to say get over your bad self. There is a gatekeeper. Audits are done. People are fired and go to jail. You have picked a fight about something you know nothing about.

Proves my point.

The bottom line is, there is a system in place. Per Diem rates are set based on the cost of living in the area of travel. Let's use the Pax River M&IE rate of $39 as an example.

Breakfast - IHOP Linda's. $10.

Lunch - Monterey, Asahi, etc. $10.

Dinner - Lonestar, Outback, Appleby's etc. at least $20. Add a glass of wine or two and watch out.

Now you are in a strange town. What to do. Should I sit in the room and watch the tube all night? Maybe I want to catch a movie? ($15)

If I were at home, breakfast and dinner would be made at home, and I'd take my lunch to work. Entertainment would consist of spending time with my kids. Just a little bit cheaper.

M&IE covers the gap between your normal cost of living and the added cost of being away from home. Nobody gets rich off of it.
And you are posting from home at 9 in the morning? I bet not......perhaps you should be working and spending my tax dollars as wisely as you claim you do.

Bet all you want, but you don't know squat, do you? What shift do I work? Where do I work? Where was I when I posted? Was I overseas? Was I in MD? Was I in CA?

Since you lack the intellect to debate the issue, you have resorted to personal attacks. Thanks for showing your true colors, idiot.

Now then, explain how anything I said was wrong? Oh, that's right, you don't know enough to do that.

MrWeb, I did my 20 in the Navy and I'd be willing to bet you I "lost" money on per diem. Bet you didn't investigate the government underpaying did you? There are at least two sides of any story and I understand you had your job to do, but were there any doing as much work on the other side. I know you'll say no because nobody complained. I just accepted the fact that, for example, I spent $200 on a trip and they gave me $180 back I didn't come out that bad. Just food for thought.

Give me a break MMDad. You know you were at work. I would guess St. Inigoes? Furthermore, I have not personally attacked you or called you names, thanks for not responding in-kind. I refuse to argue with someone who reduces themselves to name calling. Therefore, discussion done. I believe you have truly showed your "true colors," that of someone who had a nerve hit by what I said. Accept that there some who have views other than yours and deal. Seems you have some growing to do. Furthermore, the red you left, while I give you due credit for signing it, is meaningless.

You turned this personal by saying I take advantage of the system, I'm dishonest, I feel it's OK to screw the government, I take advantage of the system, and I'm scared of an audit.

Stop the holier than thou crap.

I really don't see that as a personal attack, and if you read my post, it was not directed at you personally, if you took it as such, that was not my intent. Just some honest, albeit unanswered questions. If it hit a bit close to home, that would be something you have to live with.

I did cave and talked my non-forum lunch partner in to meeting me today at the Tides for lunch, so I'll be able to provide a review. :yay:

The menu looks pretty good. http://www.thetidesrestaurant.com/Menus/lunch.htm
I look forward to your review. If it's worth giving them a go... I will twist RoseRed and Jazzy's arm next week as they are my partners in crime when it comes to visiting the Tides for lunch. When it's the three of us... it tends to turn into "lunch and a comedic variety show"...
