Police stepped up security after the shots were fired early Monday at the home of Ernest Lampkins, who was elected in 2004 as the first black mayor of the small, predominantly white northwest Louisiana town.
If it were racially motivated, why would they wait more than two years after the guy was elected to "show their displeasure"?

Greenwood is about 150 miles north of Westlake, where Gerald Washington, that town's first black mayor, was found shot to death in a parking lot on December 30, a few days before he was to take office.

The coroner and the sheriff pronounced Washington's death a suicide, but his family and supporters have questioned the ruling.
This story is a lot more interesting. Why would someone who'd just been elected mayor commit suicide right before taking office?

People Don't Shot Shotguns Into Mayor's Homes Everyday
The mayor could be involved with some shady characters (similar to the lovely Marion Barry).

It could have been random crime.

Could have really been anything. And it annoys me that the immediate assumption is that it's racially motivated.

Well...I will admit that was my assumption. Just wanted to post and see what others think about it.

Shady character's don't think about putting a "for sale" sign in his yard.

No, but fed up citizens who aren't pleased with bribes or kickbacks taken by this mayor might. That's what I got from that part of the story - that the mayor is "for sale", not that they were trying to sell his house out from underneath him.

I mean, it *is* Louisiana, after all.

Westlake is where another black mayor died, 150 miles away from this story. Not the same town. Not the mayor before this one. What was the word you used "assume"

What DOES that have to do with the story we're discussing?

Well...lets see. your logic:

Mayor in other town kills himself before he takes office...shady stuff (assumed, interesting)

So you assume this mayor, 150 miles away, is shady (takes bribes, kickbacks)

So word of the day is Assume.

I admitted to it. While you were doing it this entire thread..... But I will be the ass
