The hardrive should still be good (as long at it will power up with an external cable).
You can pull the hardive out, pull it out of it's internal case (to get to the sata connection).
Hook it up to another computer that has an external sata drive connection.
I'm not computer smart, but we do similar stuff like that at work.

For insurance purposes, the hubby is taking it up to the Geek Squad today to get an estimate on the repair as well as a diagnosis as to what's exactly broke. When I boot it up, I hear the motor going, but that's it -- nothing shows on the monitor, I don't hear any of the usual clicking noises. Also, when we tried to hook up the S-Video and switch out display to the tv, that didn't work either. I'll mention what you said above to the Geek Squad and see what they can do in that department. I also have an IT guru at work who does this stuff on the side, so I plan to have him look at it as well, but insurance needs a valid business to provide the paperwork for their needs.
