Walsh: Time to grow up and put your guns away
By Rebecca Walsh
Tribune Columnist
My 20-month-old nephew loves Elmo and Dora. He also has started making explosion and gunfire noises. I get the inevitability of little boys' fascination with guns. What I can't figure out are the men and sometimes women who don't grow out of the gun-crazy stage of childhood, who need to have a handgun on their hips at all times, who need their neighbors to notice. Ten of them stormed the West Valley City Council meeting last week to back up Travis Deveraux, a 36-year-old credit card company worker, who was detained by police in December while exercising with his Smith & Wesson. "I don't blame them for being a little bit extra careful," Deveraux said. "But there's a line they crossed between being a little bit careful and a little bit too careful." I thought there was no such thing as "too careful" - especially with a gun.

But the OpenCarry movement is a mystery to me. What kind of psychology - overcompensation, paranoia, antisocial personality - is behind that thinking?
Steven Gunn, an attorney and board member of the Gun Violence Prevention Center of Utah, believes it's pure ego.
"We have inconsiderate boors walking around on the street carrying firearms openly," says Gunn. "I don't think they are truly afraid for their safety. Most of them are trying to make a statement about the Second Amendment."

is this a sexual remark ....

Utah's OpenCarry activists put on a show for the Los Angeles Times a few weeks ago, trying to appear warm and fuzzy, shopping at Costco, just like you and me - but with their handguns flapping in the breeze. They meet once a month at restaurants like Denny's and Sweet Tomatoes to socialize.

I guess we need to grow up, to bad MD does not have a carry law like this;

Utah lawmakers set up this stalemate when they wrote the state's anything-goes concealed weapon law. They deliberately left open a loophole for those who carry their guns out in the open. Under Utah law, open carriers must be 18 years old and keep their bullets out of the chamber. That's it. No training, no background check required.

All in all, this reporter seems to come off a some sexiest biatch, offended by guys carrying guns, like anyone who would Open Carry has a short pecker is trying to compensate ....

I guess the same goes for guys driving muscle cars or Porsche's

Rebecca Walsh needs to pull the stick out of her snide ass and get a grip. The hysteria of the Left is just exasperating. I get this mental picture of them all standing around at cocktail parties, white wine spritzers in hand, shuddering at the idea of firearms and thinking they're ohso socially responsible.

Lighten up. Rebecca is a liberal who hasnt been robbed or raped yet.

They usually change their mind's after they become victims, but sad to say, some of them never learn.

I carry a handgun with me everywhere I go.

When I'm at safeway (safe my ass) I am fully ready to shoot someone who takes a grape.

also, when I'm pumping gas after work in broad daylight I would shoot a person trying to steal my sweet Saturn Ion.

Pretty much I figure rather then wait for myself to become a victim (like everyone in the entier world has been or will be), I'll head it off by carrying a loaded weapon with me wherever I go.

That is all.

Knowing that the :sarcasm: was not needed in your words above, I have to ask - Is there any American ideal that you believe in? Or, do you really just hate everything about everybody that believes in something - anything?

oh yeah, and I don't have the safety on.

I don't have time to fiddle around when someone is shooting/stabbing/raping me.

Hopefully you'll never be attacked and will never need one.. because the alternative: REALLY needing one and not having one, really sucks.

I also support all people age 12 to 125 should be issued 1 hand gun and two clips.

also they should have them in schools. After all, criminals have guns and there have been school shootings.

Our children must be safe in school.

Enjoy your spritzer.

I only drink coca cola products and wild cherry pepsi.

also milk and orange juice.

If they're handing out spritzers, you may have mine.

edit: no one better be drinking and driving here, or I'll shoot your tires out before you run someone over.

I could picture the same things going on down here...but they would have 10oz beers in hand.

I think middle school kids should be given firearm safety courses. Where's the problem? Just because you and your kid are irresponsible, paranoid dolts, doesn't mean everyone is.

Middle school age is a perfect time - old enough to be able to physically and mentally handle shooting, young enough to have safe practices ingrained.

what on earth are you talking about?

I got my first shotgun when I was 12.

Sure it was just a little .410, but I took the course etc. etc. I have my .410 my 12 gauge, my .50 cal. Black Powder, and a 9mm Luger.

I am far from irresponsible, which is why I don't advocate the general public wandering around with loaded weapons.

also, my son is three. Hardly the age for weapon training.

What, did I pick the non-sarcastic post to respond to?

The problem with most people, isn't that they were born effed up, they were just never taught. We, as a society, teach our children more and more math, history, filling out welfare forms... but less on how to live.

Ok since you're a pussy and VB removed my original post, let me rephrase...

"when Chester the molester pulls his knife on someone, smacks them in the head, takes their 3 year old from their arms and forces them to watch while he gets his jollies on their lil boy, hopefully someone with a ccw comes along and blows Chesters head off or them."

You sure as hell aren't man enough to.

Side note: DJ, that was NOT over the line. It drove my point home. This buffoon doesn't get it.

actually, kid, you don't get it.

'chester' won't have to pull a knife on anyone, as he will be able to carry a loaded handgun.

and it's takes a special kind of person to tell a father he wouldn't be man enough to stop his three year old from being molested.

tsk tsk.

edit: how am I a pussy because vrai removed your post?

I didn't report it.

check your facts before you talk ....

I'd say it makes you sound like more of an idiot, but that really really isn't possible.

No dum dum, you check YOUR facts.

1. Not all Chesters have access to guns.
2. I'm no kid. In fact, I'm quite sure I'm older than you.
3. I am a special person and you aren't man enough.
4. I didn't say you reported it. Guilty conscience??
5. You are a pussy.
