I think there's some validity to Walsh's writing, but she's overgeneralizing. There are a lot of people who want to carry a sidearm to impress other people, who feel empowered by it, etc. There are also a lot of people who carry because they have a valid reason for doing so, so as usual, the truth about all things dealing with human behavior falls somewhere between the extremes.
We had an open carry law here in FL ro awhile, but it didn't last long. It was meant to allow people to avoid getting hassled during times they needed to open carry a handgun. Most folks who work in gun stores open carry, other people who carried at their work would be allowed to go from work to home without having to disarm, etc. But of course... there have to be those who screw things up by strapping on fancy western holsters and carrying just to be cool, to look tough, etc., and that was the end of that law. The sight of rednecks walking around like they were in Dodge City was enough to worry the tourists to the point where the state had to nix the law.
I wanted a CCP for years, even thought in reality I had no need for one, and I admit it... it was an empowerment thing. When I got my permit here in FL, I carried for a few days, but the reality was it's a major PITA. Having 2.5 pounds of metal on your waist gets old and uncomfortable fastk, and I've only found a few occasions since 2004 to carry. If I were in a high-risk job, or lived in a high-risk area, I guess the downsides would be balanced out, but I don't so see no point to be uncormfortable every day just because I have a one in a million chance of being attacked.

It is not that, you act like that if citizens are in public carrying guns people will be getting shot over minor arguments ect... Over 40 states are shall issue states, millions of gun owners carry a concealed weapon and you almost never hear about any incidents of these people breaking the laws.
However, there are several cases where they have been there to help save people and even have had their lives taken in trying to protect innocent people they don't even know.
People should have a choice.

what is this knife crap? If everyone can carry a gun, no one will be using a knife anymore. Look, I'm all for personal rights, but I still think this is a bad idea.
Unless you can find some way to regulate who gets to carry a gun then it's a poor notion. Also, even if you're a model citizen on paper, doesn't mean you aren't a sadistic ####### that shouldn't be within ten feet of a sharp stick much less a gun.

It is already being done in most states. Anyone that is not a criminal can get a permit to carry a gun in 40 some odd states.
Don't you understand the notion that the people that are going to have the balls to do something illegal with a gun aren't going to worry about the minor charge of possesion if they happened to get stopped with it?

But in reality I made the wrong choice. I wanted to carry for all the wrong reasons, and there are a LOT of folks like me out there. I'm a member of the largest shooting club in Jacksonville, and I know lots of folks with CCPs, and too many of them are hair-trigger guys who carry to prove something, and that's not the folks who should be carrying. Granted, they haven't shot anyone yet, but it's just a matter of when.
Of all the CCP folks I've talked to, I would say about 40% are like me. They wanted to carry for the empowerment aspect, got tired of the PITA factor, and now keep their permit so we don't have to deal with waiting periods on new gun purchases. Another 30-40% are the folks who need to carry... corrections officers, cash carriers, couriers, cash business folks, etc. The rest are the Rambo crowd that worry me.

I guess you slept through your economics classes. The last thing FL wanted was tourists going somewhere else and taking their bucks with them. When it came down to a choice between tourist dollars and open carry, open carry lost.
