Maybe you didn't catch the statement where I said I've never used the terms "tard" and "retard" when speaking about actual mentally challenged people. I already said I sympathize for them, as I know how blessed I am for my God-given gift of a healthy brain.
Those terms, "tard" and "retard", are broadly accepted as slang for someone who does stupid things, such as the young student who decided to take a swig of his latest lab experiment.''
Criminitley... go take a look at this thread for some examples of people who can see the levity in situations dealing with mentally disabled or challenged people. You could take some lessons.

How can the word "Tard", as used on this forum, not be a direct insult to the mentally retarded? In every case it is used as an insult so what does that say about your opinion of the actually retarded? It sure isn't admiration. Laughing about a picture of a Special Olympics runner or calling someone a "Tard" has nothing to do with being politically correct but it has a lot to do with insensitivity.

You know, as the parent of a mentally disabled (retarded) kid, I've developed a callous that allows me to read that epithet on this board, but I think that hiding behind the disclaimer "I don't mean nothin'" is a cop out.
I understand that you're probably very nice people and you don't really mean any offense by the use of the word 'tard, references to the short bus, etc. (hey, there's even a smiley for it) but there are some people, myself included who feel offended by it.
I know some of you are thinking "get over it," but I would ask you if this "good natured ribbing" would be as acceptable if we used terms or a racial nature instead. Folks are born into a race or genetic endowment or disability by chance, not choice.
Now, being born French and not leaving France, that's entirely different!

With all due respect, Nomoney, I know plenty of St. Mary's natives and NONE of them ever uses the term SMIB the way that some blacks use the N-word among themselves. It's more like the J-word for Marines--its use can lead to a fistfight.

I was born in Prince Frederick and lived all but three years of my life in St. Marys county.........I use the word SMIB in regards to some of the more inbred families in the county and just as a joke.

One day everyone will realize that not everyone agrees with something everyone else says. If only some would realize that not everything is taken at face value.
