Toy Ideas for a picky Lab?

Saabstory

WooHoo!
Hi all, I am relatively new to the forum here. I joined a month or so ago to find a good boarding facility in the area; and thanks to all of you for the help I found on that one. We used countrysides over the Thanksgiving break and our Lab seemed in perfect health and happy as a clam when we went to get him.

I am trying to get a stocking stuffer or two for him and I am having a lot of trouble; so I was hoping you all may have some good ideas... A little background:

We adopted our Yellow Lab back in August; he was 5 years old at the time. He is well behaved overall; a little of the Lab energy peeks through now and then but mostly he is fine indoors. We get him out for walks as much as we can; and three or four times a week he shows his playful side so I know it is there. I have tried balls, frisbees, soft squeaky toys, dentabones, chilly bones, ropes, pull toys, etc... I cannot find a toy he actually wants to play with.

I come home from work now and then and he will greet me with such energy; wagging half his body with excitement. he'll flop over for a good belly rub (he does love his belly rubs  ), and when done he'll hop up and pounce forward with his front pays splayed out and head low like he is ready to play. I just feel bad because I can't figure out what he wants to play with... I play with him myself; a little batting and such, but he never really gets into it that way; so I know he is hoping for a toy of some type.

He LOVES bones and rawhide chews. He tears through them and comes praying for more but I obviously don't want to give him too much edible fun. I need a toy that he can chew to his hearts content without consuming it; but so far the "fake" plastic bones don't get more than a minute's attention from him. Likewise when he wants to play I try taking him out immediately for some fetch or other games; but he never wants to.

I am hoping some dog owners with more experience might have a few ideas; especially those who have adopted an "older" dog and had to figure out what the previous toys might have been. :banghead:

Thanks for any ideas you might have!

Get him a cat to chew on?

j/k

Get him a ball to retrieve. Really cool would be a "gun" that shoots balls so the thrower doesn't have to work so hard. Think I have seen pump tubes that shoot balls at ToysRUs.

Or simple kongs with a little peanut butter spread on the inner wall.
Jolly balls and kongs are almost indestructable :yay:

I vote for the Kong as well. If you search Kong's they'll tell you which one is made for what type of chewer.

I have tried several balls and he just seems to have no interest in, you know... being a Retriever :killingme Thanks though!

I like the look of the Kong or cube; maybe I'll try those next. I have tried several plush toys in the past; so I am guessing the squirrels will not be much of a hit unfortunately.

thanks for the ideas so far!

They had something on tv for dogs last night on a program called "it's me or the dog". She had bought something called Fox on a stick. See if you can find one somewhere. Try somewhere like Valley Pet Supply or Petedge.com. Good Luck! :howdy:

My dog likes to play with soft squeaky toys or rope toys, but he loves to chew on these sterilized bones. They last forever! He likes them plain, but now and then I'll put a little peanut butter inside to give him something different. He will absolutely not touch anything that smells like rubber, and he doesn't really like Kongs at all.

My Black Lab will play with anything, she loves tug toys and has a pink elephant that squeaks. She has a real bone, that she is chewing on for over 2 years now. It is just plain, no flavor.

Hey, thanks all!

My dog likes to play with soft squeaky toys or rope toys, but he loves to chew on these sterilized bones. They last forever!

I have always been afraid he would just crush one of these so I hadn't tried them yet. Do they really hold up to chewing? If so, that may be a really good option, thanks!

I have tried Frisbees too unfortunately. He looks at me like I am crazy :killingme ;)

A Puppy playmate may be a great idea; but it took me two years to convince the wife to get 1 dog. By the time I convince her we should have two; our current dog will likely be 12. But I agree it might be one way ;)

Thanks again everyone!

There's no way he could crush them. They're extremely tough. They eventually wear down, but it takes a long time.

Perfect, thanks! I'll give that one a try; probably the Kong as well but we'll see which he likes better.

Thanks everyone! :buddies:

My boxer loves hooves. I will admit while they are chewing on them they stink. He loves they and they will last a good long time. You can buy singles at Petco or Petsmart. If he likes them you can buy them by the bag. They also have them stuffed with cheese and bacon, etc. Makes them last even longer.

Hope this helps.

Since he LOVES chewies, try this:

Buy a nylabone and soak it in beef broth over night or a couple days (however long you wish) to put a "chewie" flavor on it.

Give it to him and encourage him to chew on it. If he likes it, he'll probably play with it.

They're out to get us
empty paper towel or toilet paper rolls. paper bags (like from a grocery store). they'll tear em to shreds. my lab loves playing with them. you'll have to clean up (obviously) but if you're ok with that, it's a nice free toy for them that they'll have fun with for awhile.
