Trouble Sleeping

I read an interesting article the other day about how needing 8 hours of straight sleep may be a myth, and unatural for some people. it was a really neat read.

anyway, if you have a smartphone, you can download a meditation app, they have several of them dedicated to sleep. It seems kind of silly, but it really can help, especially if the issue is getting your mind to "turn off" also, tv before bed gets your mind going, and can make it hard to shut off, so you shouldn't watch tv before bed if you are having trouble sleeping. A comfortable spot, a little guided meditation and it can def help.

I can't sleep without the TV on and I can easily sleep 8 or more hours....

well obv it depends on the person, especially if it is a sleep habit. but in general the fast moving pictures and noise of the tv gears the mind up, and the effect lasts for awhile after the tv is turned off..for someone who is already having trouble sleeping, it could be a contributing cause.

Tv at night is def a habit. I cannot have any noise or light when I go to sleep...even the light on my sat box has to be off or it bugs the crap out of me..other people I know can have it on and LOUD and it doesn't seem to phase them

If it wasn't a script-only med, you could take Phenytek; it's a anti-convulsant; but it put most folks "out."

All "home remedies" and meds aside; when the body needs rest, it WILL get it.

Melatonin just isn't working for me. I take one pill around 9:30pm fall asleep around 11-11:30pm and then I'm wide awake at 3am. Sucks because I have to get up at 5:15am to get ready for work.

Stress is a wonderful thing, not.

Melatonin works for me, but I found it works better taking it with dinner, around 7 pm. Takes a while to work and you need to take on a regular basis, but only a low dose, less than 3mg. More is not better. Have you considered perhaps you may have sleep apnia? Simple test consisting of an overnight stay at a sleep center (St. Marys hospital or Calvert have them) and if you do, being perscribed a CPAP machine to help with your breathing at night. I did that, found out I had some serious apnea issues, but with the machine (sorta a pain in the a** until you get used to it), I am a happy camper all night and wake up better and with more energy.

I posted about this just a couple weeks ago. Segmented sleep. I can't sleep more than 4-5 hours straight (wake up feeling great btw) but I can be a napping fool in the middle of the day. Once I stopped fighting it and started doing what my body wanted I felt 45867 times better.

Anti convulsants are the devil. Thank GOD I'm not epileptic because every one that I've ever been on was a nightmare!

Natural Sleep suggestions

I agree, I do not like to take drugs unless there are absolutely nothing else to do. I have a degree in Natural Health so try many things for sleep. Number one your bedroom must be used only for sleep not TV watching, working on computer etc, make it as relaxing as possible with colors, plants (plants use carbon dioxide that we beathe out). Posiblly take a warm bath that calming herbals or Essential Oils have been added to. Lavender is very calming, can use dried flowers in a sachet "pouch" in your pillow case, put a couple dropes of Essential Oil on a cotton ball under the fitted sheet at he head of your bed, or defuse in a difusser. There are several methods of imagining your self in your perfect, secret place that will relax you. Belleruth Naparstek has a VERY GOOD gUICED IMAGERY cd, A Meditation to Help You with Healthful Sleep. her website is Guided Imagery & Meditation by Belleruth Naparstek - CDs, MP3s, Tapes - Health Journeys. I would be happy to talk with you about these and other suggestions if you would like. My website is Home.

Exercise and a clean diet. Turn off the TV, dim the lights and try reading. Definitely avoid food in the 60 or so minutes before bed.
