I just adopted a rottie mix from the tri county shelter. Having a heck of a time getting her home too! She was a stray so had to stay for awhile incase someone came for her. I adopted her as soon as I could. Then she got sick with kennel cough and couldn't go get spayed. So ten days later she is better and the vet I wanted to spay her couldn't get her in for another week......three days ago the shelter calls to tell me my dog has heartworms and did I want my money back!!!!!! So now I am trying to work through the Humane Society to get her spayed and treated for HW. Not allowed to do the treatment without a vet. I'm afraid their "treatment" might just kill her. She goes in for treatment Wed. If anyone has any advice on how I can get her treated holistically through a vet I am all ears! I just can't get my mind around the rules they have for adoptions. They are crowded with dogs and still my dog cannot go home. I am willing to adopt the dog even with the medical problem and willing to pay for it but they won't let me do it my way. I do not understand........

No there is no real holistic way to treat heartworms. Who won't let you take the dog home to get treated? Tri-County or Humane Society?
Tri-County will not let me take her home without being spayed and treated for HW. She just got over kennel cough and now they want to spay her and treat for her for HW all at once. I think its too much.
There are holistic treatments for HW but they take months and months to work and so far I have not been able to find any vets here that use it. I can't remember what its called......it's a mixture of different herbs and supplements. I found out about it 9 years ago right after I had my other dog treated and would have much prefered that treatment over the poison. But the dog is able to run around and live a normal life during treatment instead of being confined. I'm just frustrated thats all. I want the dog to have her spay, wait for a while THEN have her HW treatment. She will be going to a new home with new people etc etc. If she is being treated for HW, she can't get excited. She needs time to adjust to her new home and people and be able to feel comfortable and relaxed here first. UGH!
I'm not trying to say anything bad about Tri-county. The people there have been wonderful and really seem to care about the animals and have always been nice and pleasant when I visit my dog. My problem is with their policies.....I just want my doggie to come home
If you are talking about the herbal "remedies" I gotta say, be careful as heck. Problem with them is that the heartworms can bundle up and create a 'sphere' to protect the eggs... the herbal stuff kills the eggs and microfilaria, but isn't strong enough to kill the adults which have to go through their life cycle. So if they ball up, the herbal won't be effective, and by the time you know, the heartworm has progressed.
I can sympathize with not wanting to put chems in your dog, but this is serious serious stuff, and reaching for a holistic solution may not be the wisest or best choice for your dog.
I have not found or heard of a holistic 'treatment' that I wouldn't consider a crapshoot and potentially just a time waster.
I know, it's risky but so is the alternative. There really isn't any "safe" way to get rid of them. She is being spayed and treated at the humane society and I haven't heard anything negative about them but I've only lived here a few months so......Basically, if I want the dog, I have to do what they tell me to do. I hate that. But thanks for the advice.
Well no, but the actual proscribed methods ARE safer, because they have far more experience with them. Consider that it's not like other things where the treatment is easier on the patient because the holistic approach is more natural... this isn't a cold... the effect is the same. The chems they use are so low dose they don't harm the dog, just the worms, and it's the killing of the worms and the detritus and little worm corpses that cause problems...
The holistic stuff is unexact and unreliable and can have very catastrphic results due to that, from giving the worms time to get worse to killing too many and killing the dog. It's not as 'exact' and the standard treatment.
Seriously, your dog is going to be safer following proscribed standard treatment. Thats more a fact than an opinion.
We'll be looking for a dog in a couple months. Something in the beagle or smaller range. Beagle, Schnauzer, Scottie or some other terrier type dog most likely.
All I know for sure is it will come from the pound.

Are sure you don't want a man's dog?
Nah, small dogs are cool too.
I'd go with the schnauzer, stay away fromt eh beagle, unless you like the sound of bad brakes... ...
