Uber

My son said the same thing when he read my post so it might not have been Uber or Lyft. I was taken up by ambulance to St. Mary's emergency and they discharged me 9:30 - 10PM something like that. I didn't want to disturb my family so I told the nurse or clerk whoever it was at the emergency desk that I didn't have a ride and she said the hospital could make arrangements, then a few minutes later that someone would be coming shortly but it would be cash only - $45.00.

I thought it was probably Uber or Lyft, but in retrospect, I guess it could have been her relative. Oh well. I'm still alive, no harm done. I don't have a smart phone, so when I'm forced to use Uber or Lyft my son makes the arrangements for me and I reimburse him.

Thanks for the concern and the warning. Duly noted.
Maybe the hospital has the local taxi on call! That's totally a possibility and makes sense when you explain it that way. Hopefully you don't find yourself in another situation of needing a ride so late at night :huggy:

I wonder why? Not trying to be mean, but maybe it's your attitude? Some people are just kind and are willing to help others.
I was being, tongue-n-cheek, ie., silly. Of course I have friends. "True", friends, I can count on one hand with a couple of missing fingers. Really. About three, "true", friends. In real life, I help others quite frequently. Strangers even. But here. This place, allows me to let Mr. Hyde roam free. And roam he does. Also, in fact, I think I've mellowed out somewhat over time. Not as searingly vitriolic as I once was, though, there are days, I still let it rip a bit. And, if you ever met me in person, I'm pretty sure you'd find me the kindest and most sweetest fellow, ready to assist you, if needed, or answer a question. However, cross me, show or treat me with undeserved contempt, disrespect me, (not the small or indifferent slights), or my family, once, and you'll have an enemy for life. Other than that, I am really a great guy to be around. Also, the things I read, or things written, commented, reactions, about my posts here, are not taken personally, or to heart. My, "feelings", don't get hurt here.

Psychologically speaking, I think, people misunderstand so much of what is written, on forums, because they are applying, and cannot separate, their own unique experiences and understandings to certain subject matter, thinking, and responding, within only that frame of mind taking it personally, [such as thinking I've an attitude, (not a snipe at you)], rather than being completely open minded about what has been written. If someone calls me a name, ehh, so what. All I see is an avatar and screen name calling me a name. Applying real world, in person, interactions, with all the nuances that go with it, here, cannot, and should not, be done. It's pretty difficult to write in such a way as to show no intention of offence, when in person, the whole of the, "picture of a thousand words", body imagery, movements, facial expressions, location, etc., is taken into account with what has been said. One would nearly have to write novel to answer or respond to a post to avoid offence, least of which is disagreement of the subject. By the way. Your avatar makes me crave for some raisins. The green ones.

My dot, and her hub are the only ones in the fam that have used Uber. They say it sucks. :boo: Plus, there has been news that it is dangerous to use them. Take SG up on her offer. That is really nice of her. If I had not moved to Mont Co, I would offer to help you, too, friend. Hope you get your car back soon.

Thank you, I'm sure you would.

If you don't reply or tell them you you dont have to disclose it, they just cancel. And they do pick you up anyway, it is akward. Last time the driver called me 4x and messaged 5x in the first 3 minutes of my my accepting ride. I did not answer till she was almost to me where I was going so she did not cancel. Then I got in the car and she complained the whole way about how her car is a gas hog and she would only make $3.50 for the trip.

That concerns me. I read the drivers pay is 80 percent of the ride, which with the price I got for 1 way, they wouldn't even make minimum wage for the ride. I'm concerned about them not showing.

That's what I was thinking too. It sounds like the going taxi rate around here.

I wonder about that in this area. Seems to me that there is an aging population in this very rural area. How do they get to the doctors, who sits with them while they wait? Seems like it would be a good business opportunity for some enterprising soul. Or do we already have that here and I just don't know about it?

I checked into this. The Office on Aging has a transportation program for people 60 and older to go to the doctors. But you have to apply which takes times to process and it's a volunteer program. There may not be a volunteer available the day you need to go. There's no charge but they ask for a donation. STS has a program for elderly and disabled also. Again, you have to apply and if approved a bus will come to your house. I think the fee was $5.00 one way. I have a friend who is disabled and doesn't drive. I helped her look into all this a year or so ago. I was working at the time and couldn't help her out with a ride.

My son does this all the time, takes one or the other to work, a distance of less than 4 miles, just because he doesn't feel like driving. He seldom, if ever, has a problem with them coming to get him. I think he called them at 3 or 4 in the morning not too long ago and they were there in ten minutes. He swears by them.

Uber or Lyft?

Remember, when, back in the day, doctors used to make house calls? Maybe you could get the doc to come to you? Wishful thinking I know. What's the worse that could be said? No? Well, maybe with lots of laughter in the background. Still, wouldn't hurt to ask. And, just in case, make them pay for by the call by calling their 800 number. Scooby Doo, snicker snicker snicker.

I do remember the doctor coming to the house when I was real young and I think had a high fever with measles. I can hear the office laughing now if I called and asked that.

Mitzi - My son said if you want to pre-arrange a pickup - Lyft will do that BUT he said sometimes that works, sometimes not - have a backup plan. Uber is his Plan B when the Lyft pre-arranged pickups don't show. He said they're pretty decent and it may take as long as 20 minutes for them to show. Worst case scenario might be arriving a little earlier than planned. You don't pay until they show up and take you to your destination so that eliminates your concern about getting a refund if they don't show. He said he pays with Paypal or a credit card - doesn't think they do cash (except for a tip). I'm not sure that's 100% accurate - I distinctly remember having to pay cash when I got picked up from the emergency room late at night - might be a thing they have going with St. Mary's though.

Keep me posted if you need any more information or a ride.

Thanks for all of your help. Maybe if you pick me up, I could introduce you to my NEIGHBOR :killingme:killingme

It's on Friday. I can drive. I mentioned the vertigo, but when I'm sitting I'm fine. My balance is way off though, which is why I don't want to take the bus. I can't really walk any distance without holding on something.

I feel the need to report in since everyone was so helpful to me. A friend offered to take me yesterday, then this morning she didn't come thru. I ended up calling Lyft and was very pleased! The first driver was here in 15 minutes and the driver to get home was there in 5 minutes. My anxiety was for nothing as usual o_O

Sorry, late to the thread, but for future reference, I think you can schedule a ride in advance, say you want to leave at a certain time to go to the airport or something. I believe I used that feature on vacation, to do just that, get to the airport to fly home.
Also, FWIW, I've looked at my Uber app a couple of times and it does not bode well for people needing a ride, not a lot of drivers show as being on the road, and we are talking 235 (Hollywood to Lexington Park & Solomons area).

I noticed that today too on the app. I think they're were only 4 available.

It’s funny you say that. Hub and I left southern MD, too. Not that we wanted to, but moved in 2016 to help family (we are not natives of the area but moved there in 1998). My questions are, if you didn’t like southern MD, why are you still posting on a southern MD forum, and did you leave the area because it was too conservative for you? We really miss living in Calvert. Life is change, and all. Happy foruming! :)

What wonderful area are you in now? I guess I've been lucky to have been able to drive myself anywhere I needed or wanted to go all of my life or use public transportation if I had to.
