Ungrateful asshats

Here's a reality check, dear Miggy. You said the hat was something that you could have made which tells me she actually put thought into her gift. She saw that hat and liked the craftsmanship and THOUGHT OF YOU.

She is your M-I-L therefore she will always feel the need to purchase something to present you with for the holiday. I would consider you to be a cruel and selfish person to take that away from her.

ok so now that I've read my way to the end of this thread (and commented along the way), don't pick on me for being so late to the post .... I was really BUSY yesterday ..... is everyone in the gift-giving spirit now? If not think of this, some folks actually buy people a gift they know they won't like and get JOY from that - there are sick people in this world for sure (son-in-law not liked, etc.). Hmmmm.

This is why my mother hates me  But its soooo worth seeing the facial expressions as she opens up a box of toilet seat covers or 9 year old spiced tea.

Well *I* am back in the Christmas spirit, so don't you effers ruin it for me :smack:

I thought of the funnest thing for my niece (8) and nephew (5): cute stockings filled with all sorts of trinkets and goodies. The stockings were $2 at Target, and will be filled with toy cars, lip schmackies, puzzle games, candy, etc. They'll love it because each item is something they'll enjoy, plus there's a whole lot of them.

Seriously? Did somebody take a dooky in your stocking? WTF.

JFC. You know, this is the problem I have with people these days. Everybody thinks it's all about themselves. Whether you like your stupid little present or not, the person who bought it more than likely bought it thinking it would bring just the tiniest amount of joy to your miserable existence... maybe give you 20 seconds of freedom from the dark pathetic cynicism and selfishness that so many peole suffer from.

But no! It's "Oh gee, I can't accept that because it's crappy and I don't like it."

Why not try giving back a little? The best way to do that is to show appreciation and gratitude for the simple fact that somebody thought about you... it isn't about whether you like the gift or not, you know. Not for your part.

Maybe if you try just a little to think of the giver, instead of yourself, you may find more pleasure in making someone feel good about their efforts, regardless of how foolish you find them, than you do in being a complete prick about it.

Holy crap. Merry effing Christmas!

I bowl overhand
I have finally reached my goal of NOT exchanging Christmas gifts with anyone. After years of trying to buy a gift for everyone who mattered to me, I've finally convinced them all that I would prefer to share time together or for them to donate to charity or cause they care about. I'm not against gift giving and haven't ruled out doing it again, but for now I'm not obligated to do so. I get more joy giving to a disadvantaged child than to any of my relatives who have everything they need. To my mind, the custom of giving gifts stems from the gold, frankincense, and myrrh brought to the Christ child who had nothing. That's the spirit in which I feel gifts should be given.

The family used to (the sisters still do) a gift exchange. Minimum amount, draw a name from a hat.. etc.. etc..

We decided last year to have a BIL's night out instead. All of the money that we spent on gifts we spend buying each other beer, and playing pool.

This year we are working on night #2.. and am sure we'll be up to a 1/2 dozen shortly after New Years. We are a mixed bag of guys, that you look at us as a group you'd think.. "What the Hell? They have absolutely nothing in common, yet here they are drinking it up and having a great time." Of course looks won't tell you that we are all married into one awesome family.
