Only believable rumor I'd heard was this guy experienced back pain and was refused care of some kind.

If you've ever had back pain, it can be like a kidney stone that doesn't ever fully pass - it's excruciating and endless.

On the other hand - this guy was way too rich, too smart and too much going for him - he either snapped - or something else is going on.
Whole thing is even weirder than I imagined. Apparently one of his "heroes" was the Unabomer.

Once I quit regular physical work I sold GMC's. Couple were really satisfied and brought me a box of 50 since they were in Altoona!
I later lived in Dover, Pa and bought a Vette from a dealership close to Altoona.

Possible. Couple of paths here:
In so much pain that he figures he has nothing to lose and relief from the pain if he 'suicides by cop'.
Or maybe he thinks he'll get the pain relief while in the pen.

So motive: in pain, getting no relief, rejected by insurance, enacts revenge.

Well if he committed this crime because he couldn't have sex with his bad back, I have news for him. The kind of sex he will get in prison doesn't have anything to do with his back.
