Unusual TG foods

Lovingmaryland's shrimp fried rice made me think about this:

Thanksgiving dinner, it's fairly standard to have turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, green bean casserole, rolls, and pie. What weirdo things does your family enjoy at TG?

My family has always been extremely traditional, no surprises. One year my aunt made a pecan pie and you'd have thought aliens landed, the way the fam gathered around like they'd never seen one before.

I know I never wouldve thought shrimp fried rice but in San Diego Big B's family did that every year. Its really yummy but more so brings back memories of family when he's away from them.

Let's see oysters on the half shell with cheese onions and balsamic vinegar cooked on the grill. Stuffed ham soup with tortellini.

I would enjoy lobster on TG but my family hasn't obliged yet.

Lobster gets my vote! Turkey is overrated! And, everyone wouldn't get sleepy because of the tryptophan.

It will be turkey this year, but next year it will be lobster!. One tip someone said on another thread is to cook the turkey upside down. I am going to try that. That is unusual.

My family has some kind of pasta as our second course, before all the turkey and mashed potatoes. Usually it's a toss up between lasagna and penne a la vodka. First we start with platters of antipasto: olives, Italian meats, cheeses, marinated mushrooms, peppers, etc. then the pasta and then turkey with all the sides. Our stuffing is way different too. It's bread with eggs and stewed tomatoes and Italian sausage. Ugh. So good. I usually just fill up on pasta and that stuffing

There ya go, sweet :yay:

Have to have some sort of oyster creation for thanksgiving.

Not yet a tradition for me, but thinking after this thanksgiving it will become one... Saw this on one of the morning shows; White Castle burger stuffing, didn't catch the recipe, but I'm thinking something like this:

Thaw frozen White Castle cheeseburgers, chopped into large pieces, stir-in beef stock, beaten eggs, sautéed onions, peppers, mushrooms and celery into a baking dish and bake? Yay or nay? I'll let you know how it comes out...

My Step-Dad taught me this one. We make it every family 'eating' gathering.

Oyster pudding.

Layer saltines, butter, and oysters in a loaf pan. Usually 3-5 layers. Pour whole milk over it. Bake. YUMMY!

No offense intended, I like oysters, but I don't think I like the sound of this dish.
