Upgrade That Old TV Antenna

It is a Christian run community center open Friday, some Saturdays and is rented out as a church on Sunday. Friday night we cater to teens who want to hang out there. we have some foods, many non alcoholic drinks, 2 pool tables, a pinball machine and 2 foosball tables. We have 3-4 live bands there every Friday. We are not paid, but are volunteers who care about helping kids go in the right direction. I'd be lying to say that we reach them all but we do try. We have them for 4 1/2 hours once a week and the world has them the rest, so you can see our job is a tough one. It was started by Karl Hinshaw, John Peterson, myself and a few others. I am the only original member left. We're open from 7-11:30pm on Friday and some Saturdays. Come by and say hi, I know some of you have but wouldn't tell me who you were. That's cool, I'm glad you came by anyway. Sorry to go off topic folks, but I was asked a question.
See, I've heard only bad things about it. I used to work at Checkers, right behind you, and every Friday brought turmoil.

It seems that every week, the police were out right by that place. A lot of kids from there came to Checkers and weren't the Christian type.

I've actually never been. I know there were a lot of people at Checkers who wanted that place closed.

Seems as though you have good intentions though.

Wasn't Karl Hinshaw a christian singer? That name sounds familiar. I THINK he was in the South Potomac Church band for a while before his death. I may have the wrong name though.

Yes to all. There was a short period when Karl & I weren't there (@ 1996) and the place was a brothel. Sex, drugs & drinking everywhere. The kids were mostly unsupervised so they did what they wanted. And yes, many would leave our place and go to Checkers and get in big trouble. Even the mall security manager hated us for a while. We made a rule to try to stop it but it only helped a little. We said, if you leave our club on Friday night, you can't come back in that night. It worked for some but not all. Most of the real trouble makers we had, left and ended up in jail. One was killed. We just couldn't get them to get with our program so we sent them out for good. They all were given many chances. I told them that we loved them but, since they won't follow our few rules, they had to stay away. I also told them that, if they kept up their behavior, they'd end up in jail or dead and it happened.
As for Karl, what a sad story. He and I met playing tennis in 1985. I was in a real estate class at CSM and he was an agent. We teamed up and worked together from 1985-1993. In 1994 he came to me asking if I was interested in starting a Christian club for adults & kids and I said yes. With the help of many others, we obtained and sanitized the old "Beef & Reef" restaurant at 3081 Old Washington Rd. He got busy in real estate and I gave up real estate because of my regular job & youth ministry committment. Karl even left MBP @ 1999 to be with his family more but, sadly, was killed in a car accident on Rt 234 on Memorial Day 2001. So, as his legacy continues, me and about 3 other folks keep the club going. He was very involved in the music at South Potomac church and he often played at MBP on Saturday nights.

Well, I can't afford it.

Priorities?

And when my TV's picture tube dies (and it will very soon, it's been fading out more and more), I won't be able to get a digital TV because of "supply and demand."

And paying 300$ for a new 30" CRT TV and then another $150 on a digital box for it is effing pointless.

I'm going to read up on this, becaus my understand of it is that everything is going Hi-Def in 2009.

I really haven't paid that much attention to it as I have cable now and as soon as they said "it will only affect over-the-air broadcast signals" I stopped listening.

But I'm the curious sort, so I found this:

Consumers then will have three options: Buy new TV sets with digital tuners. Connect to cable, satellite or pay television services. Or buy converter boxes for $60 to $70 that will allow them to receive digital broadcasts with their old analog TVs.

Salt Lake Tribune - Digital age overtaking old analog TV signals

Sounds like you just need converter boxes for your old TVs and the subsidy coupons will pay for at least one of them.

I have Karl's CD that he recorded shortly before his tragic death.

My Aunt used to volunteer with Bill Simpson (I think?) before he left and Mr. Young (the youth pastor). I think one of them went on a missionary mission, not sure though.

I remember when they used the auditorium at Westlake High School. My, how times have changed.

You know it and how it has changed! The TV set has changed for the better but the shows have changed for the worse.
No kidding. I couldn't tell you the last show I actually sat down and watched. Gone are the days you anticipated that special one day a week when your favorite show came on and blocked everything else out. Now, it's just crap, crap, and more crap on more channels then we ever imagined. Sorry indeed. :ohwell:

:yeahthat: And rabbit ears with tin foil for better reception. :lmao: :high5:
I put a Craftsman wrench on mine and taped it to the bunny ears with duct tape and electrical tape.

Worked like a charm. I got TNT, TBS, CNN, and a few others. I got stations as far south as Norfolk and as far north as Philly. I had 55 channels overall over the air.

That's amazing. I'm very suprised you were able to recieve broadcasts from stations that don't broadcast

Actually, WGN and TBS DO broadcast. I thought they only broadcast in Atlanta and Chicago but I must be wrong.

CNN's avaliable on broadcast down in Norfolk, as well as Atlanta.

I'm not sure about the TNT thing, though. That amazed me, but I didn't miss any races. Just a gift from god.

Actually, NBC doesn't come in around here, not even on cable.
