I really hate this stereotyping. Just because he was quiet and a loner doesnt make him a killer. BTK wasn't quiet or a loner, he was an active member of society, family, kids, they never knew. You never really know, there is no way to tell that someone is capable of such horrible things, unless they themselves say it flat out.

The thing is stereotyping doesn't just fall out of the sky. As unsavory as it is it is typically linked to some reality. In this case psychological studies of these types of tragedies indicate this type of personality is more prone to this type of lashing out.

Everyone, including CNN, is ignoring the important part.

I had a stalker when I was in college years ago and when I went to the university counselors they told me it was my fault. He even threatened in writing to kill me.

It is sad what happened I just hope that universities across the U.S will form policies to help students keep this from helping again.

The families are in my thoughts

...but profiling is profiling for a reason; it adds up. It's not perfect, but a loner, anti social, violent writing, those kinds of things are a common part of the make up of sudden nuts.

The long term killers like Bundy and BTK are very, very good hunters, ie, camouflage themselves as needed, adaptability, etc.

Plus, if every troubled kid who thought about snapping called the cops and said "I'm having trouble here" we'd need a million more cops.

They had some campus newspaper kid on Fox today - very well-spoken, sharp kid, made the "professionals" covering this story look like bozos.

Anyway, in his interviews with staff and students, he found that the killer had written graphically violent plays in his English class, and a few other "signs". After the Fox Friends clucked a bit and wanted to know why his professors didn't take action, the newspaper kid said basically, like what? There's no law against writing about graphic violence, otherwise half of Hollywood would be behind bars.

There's also no law against being an anti-social loner. So what do you do about something like that? Everyone's so upset and seem to think that SOMETHING could have prevented this tragedy. But what?

I am so very sorry for all that lost someone special. This is just too unbearably sad.

From what I say one of the professors brought the "behavior" to the attention of authorities and they said that there was no crime committed. If I recall she indicated that the student was removed from the mainstream class and received individual tutoring and was recommended that he receive counselling.

It was known by some that this guy had a screw, or two, loose.

So the kid bursts in and starts mowing people down, it's going to take a few seconds for an armed student to react. Sure, the damage could have possibly been minimized, but not prevented.

And the killer not being sure if other students would be armed wouldn't have been a deterrent because he was going to kill himself anyway.

The english professor was on the oday show this morning and said that she had notified the school and the local police about his writings.
Additionally i heard an interview with one of the guys roommates that indicated the police had been called twice to deal with his stalking/inappropriate behavior, and that he had been taken by the police for psych review because of suicide threats.

Excellent point. I see that as the basic motivation for people who claim that 9/11 and TWA 800 were the work of conspiracies. They don't want to admit to themselves that sometimes, nothing can be done to prevent such tragedies.

I agree totally, if your intent is to be dead at the end of your spree, why wold it matter if someone else had a gun, saves you from having to do it yourself.

Besides, the school and state still have rules about carrying guns on campus.

Sure, but until he actually commits a crime, there's not much you can do. We're not a society that locks up people for having a "loose screw".
