CLEVELAND - Van Halen made a "jump" into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday along with Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, R.E.M., the Ronettes and Patti Smith.

A panel of 600 industry experts selected the five artists to be inducted at the annual ceremony, to be held March 12 in New York.

Van Halen was the 1980s hard rock quartet led by guitarist Eddie Van Halen, outrageous lead vocalist David Lee Roth, and later rocker Sammy Hagar, that put out hits such as "Jump" and "Dreams."

R.E.M. was the quintessential indie rock band until breaking through to mass success in the early 1990s with songs like "Losing My Religion."

Grandmaster Flash led the most innovative act in early hip-hop, and the song "The Message" was like a letter from urban America.

Punk rock poet Patti Smith and Phil Spector favorites the Ronettes round out the 2007 class.

Wonder if Eddie will be there to accept? Surviving cancer, addictions and marital problems; he looked real bad last time I saw a pix of him!!

I much prefer to remember him from the "Women and Children First" or even the last greatest "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge" era.

Ever since Valerie Bertinelli left him (and God knows, she should be nominated for sainthood for having lived with him as long as she did), he hasn't been doing very well.

Wonder if "Wolfie" is going to follow in his tracks as a guitarist?

All issues aside, I'm glad that the band finally made it into the R&R HOF. They are very deserving - one of the greatest, legendary rock groups of all time.

Last time I saw them, Wolfie came out on stage and jammed with his Dad.

That's great! Now that Sammy is back with them, I wonder if they are going to do a major tour...

Do they sound as good as they did "back in the day?"

I have seen them with both, once with David Lee Roth and twice with Sammy. The last concert was way to loud so the sound was distorted.

Where's the miniskirt, made of snakeskin?
And who's the other guy singing in Van Halen?
when did reality become tv?
whatever happened to sit coms, game shows, on the radio

Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, way before Nirvana
there was U2 and Blondie,
music still on MTV
her two kids in high school
tell her that she's uncool...
cause she's still preoccupied
with 19 19 1985........

Eddie Van Halen has made me ponder the difference between "washed up" and "has-been". Washed up refers to somebody whose past output is of lasting historical importance but who has nothing of substance to offer in the present time nor is likely to contribute anything of value in the future. Has-been is somebody who was famous at one time but whose contribution is no longer important after his or her fame dies.

Eddie Van Halen = Washed up
Vanilla Ice = Has-been

Sammy is not back with them; in fact, Michael Anthony is out because he's touring with Sammy. Van Halen is slated to tour next summer with a vocalist to be named later (it's widely assumed to be DLR) and 15 year old Wolfgang on bass.

I prefer not to see new pics of them either. When I was a teenager, I had the black&white poster of DLR in black leather pants, no shirt, and his arms chained above his head. I prefer to remember him like that.

Eddie was on Howard Stern about a month ago and he's a total wreck. He barely spoke above a whisper. He claimed that he had cured his tongue cancer himself, but he's not allowed to say how because the government would hunt him down. He said smoking didn't cause his cancer; instead, the metal pick he used to put in his mouth when he played did. He had just finished composing music for a soft core porn movie and is currently living with the star of the movie. I don't know if it's drugs affecting him or if he's just loony toons, but he definitely needs help. Whenever I see a recent picture of him, I go to youtube and watch them playing "Unchained" live from around 82 or so...... it helps salve the sorrow.

The exact cause of oral cancers such, as tongue cancer are unknown, although tobacco use is involved in many cases, as is alcohol abuse and poor oral hygiene. Eddie was involved in a highly publicized personal battle with alcohol for several decades, and has been a very heavy smoker for a significant amount of time. Denial, denial, denial.....
He did seek treatment via a clinical trial through The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, so his claim of curing himself is another delusion of his.
It will be interesting to see if Eddie shows up on 3/12 for induction into the RRHF
