Vehicle GPS Recommendations

I've always been a map person. I'm pretty sure by the third time the gps said "recalculating" I'd throw it out a window.

They only say that when you go off course and it has to figure out how to fix your screw up.

I downloaded a "Spooky" voice that says "Let me consult my magic book"

I really like the GPS that I have on my smart phone. It's always up to date and it's so user friendly that we no longer use the Garmin. I think that GPS systems are going to be going the way of the pay phone soon. Smart phones do it all...

except the GPS does not require a monthly fee to use.

You old people crack me up.

I know right, how funny is it to know that people used to be able to actually think without being told what to do.

I do use the GPS now, but mostly to see what time Im going to be where Im going to. When it tells me a time, I consider it a challenge.

This is a very valid point but if you do the math it still works out to be about the same. Monthly fee vice purchasing a stand alone GPS unit that is only as up to date as it's last upgrade plus what you have to spend to update it. I use VZ navigator through Verizon and I think the cost is very reasonable for what it is.

It also works in areas without cell coverage

Get whatever Garmin is $100 currently. I always thought they were a bit silly but two years ago I was going to California for several weeks and wanted to do some siteseeing while there so I spent $99 on Newegg.com for a Garmin Nuvi 1300 and it even comes with free lifetime updates.

There are things about a GPS I never thought I would use, but for example I needed to mail something when in driving past Barstow CA, I hit find post office and boom I was there. You can also scroll through nearby restaurants by category, find a Walmart, etc. The GPS of a GPS unit is so much easier to drive to than a smartphone app, tried several and they just weren't as good. Sometimes things come up like lost luggage and you need to find a store that sells underwear and the dumbasses at the motel have no idea where to buy new underwear.

Your math is not exactly correct.
I paid something like 100 bucks for mine 6 years ago, still using it, have updated once. so, for 190 bucks (or close to it) I have used it for 6 years.
Since I dont have a cell phone, it would require me to pay a monthly fee for just the phone, not to mention any add on that is required to pay for.

I think Im getting a much better deal. and I can still find shopping, places to eat, gas stations etc... while on the road.

You don't have a cell phone? I have no retort.

Im not so important that I have to be available to everyone every second.
you can get me at home, or at work, or if an emergency while Im in my truck, I do have the onstar phone. Other than that? no need.

Where can I find this Goggle Nav you speak of? I googled it and couldn't find it. Is this a new free app or something?

If you are using a smartphone, there should be a "Navigation" icon in your apps, a blue triangle sort of thing.

Or if you have the standard Google search bar, like this...

Just hit that microphone button and ask your phone to "navigate to XX", see what happens. I was recently in FL, for instance, and needed to get some travel items. AS I pulled out of the airport, I just hit the mic button and said "Navigate to Wal-Mart", and it gave me a list sorted by distance, I tapped the top one off the list and it began to nav.

1. They will ALL occasionally give you stupid directions.

Look for one that comes with free lifetime updates.
What features do you actually want?
I picked up a Garmin Nuvi 1390 last year for about $100 and it woks OK for the most part. It doesn't find all addresses and I can't plan a rout online and then down load it to the GPS.
Thinking about upgrading to a Garmin Zumo 650 and using it for both the bike and car

I've got the 550 with the XM antenna LOVE it..

But its pretty much permanently attached to the bike..
