Vehicle GPS Recommendations

Im not so important that I have to be available to everyone every second.
you can get me at home, or at work, or if an emergency while Im in my truck, I do have the onstar phone. Other than that? no need.

I think you sell yourself short. What if you're at the store and your wife needs you to pick up some items she forgot to put on the grocery list for you?

In My Opinion
The problem in all of this is that you guys imagine me doing the shopping.
Im not allowed, I wont stand in front of the baked beans (or whatever else) and compare price to weight and whatever else might go into the equation, I dont tie up the line with a million coupons to save .30 cent.
You put beans on the list? I dont even slow down walking past them, I push the cart with one hand and grab the beans with the other.

I wont even go into a store with my wife. by the time she is done searching to save that penny, Ive taken the cart and completed the list.

:buddies: Man after my own heart. I view shopping as a search and retain mission to be accomplished with the same sort of timeline that a hostage rescue team might use. For a while, we used an Android app that let the whole family have access to a shared shopping list, and the children would be forward deployed, getting stuff off the list, and as they grabbed it, they would mark it off the shared list. :dye:

It also works in areas without cell coverage

Not an issue if you know what you are doing. Google Maps will cache the route when you create it. As long as you don't deviate in an area with no cell coverage (usually, there isn't anywhere to deviate to in no-coverage areas), you should be good. You can also manually cache map areas if you're one of those people who likes to make plans and then throw them out the window.

So.....

Nobody has any recommendations for a GPS that doesn't cost an arm'n a leg?
Ah well, I'll keep checking between BJ's Wally-Mart and Redeo Shack.
Yeah, I did that on purpose.

I'll say this...I had bad luck with TomTom and good luck with Garmin. So, here's your recommendation:
Garmin nüvi 2555LMT 5" GPS with Lifetime Map Updates and Lifetime Traffic Updates 010-01002-29 - Best Buy

I found this one yesterday......online. Just need to go to Best Buy, I guess; but what are the chances the store here has anything?
Luck is not on my side.

Also, I found an old GPS; can't remember what it is; stuck in a junk drawer.
If it works, it might save me a buck. Like I said though.....
Thanks :buddies:

Why not use straight Goggle Nav?

Google Nav is great as long as you want to use the route that they suggest. Not so much if you want to "create" your own route in Google Maps and then somewho access it via your smartphone. You can do so and just have a picture of the map, but can't activate the navigation system so that it gives you turn by turn.

I'm doing a 1000 mile iron butt motorcycle ride this coming Friday and will be fine with Google Nav for the outbound portion to Dayton because I'm going the fastest way I can...which is what GN gives me, but for the return leg I want to adjust my waypoints and take some back roads. I can make all the adjustments I want in Google Maps and save it perfectly, but when it comes to accessing it via Navigation; Big FLOP!

I'm buying a GPS today if I can find one that allows for custom routes.

I have to admit, one of the things I really miss about my Garmin was the ability to plan a route, then tell it to find gas stations near the destination, and then set that gas station as an intermediate waypoint. That was an awesome feature when I'd go on work travel and have to fill up the rental car before I return it. Now I have to just get close and then search for gas stations...potentially meaning that I have to turn around to get to the gas station.

I've heard that pawn shops are a good place to buy a cheap GPS. For all of the reasons you can think of, they're fairly plentiful there. Sounds to me from what people have recommended, look for a later model Garmin.

I've got an older Garmin, no free upgrades, so being the cheapskate I am, a lot of the places I go aren't mapped. Like when I use the bypass around Waldorf, it tries to turn me at every road to get to 301- and where I work doesn't exist. I'm "okay" with the Garmin, but I do have an issue with how all types of GPS I've tried (garmin, tomtom and yzphone thingie) map the trip. Even though I have it set up for "quickest route", it tries to take me via the first turn available, even if it's not the quickest routes. If I miss a turn, rather than u-turn me, it'll remap using my current location as the new start of trip (which based on the first turn route I just mentioned can turn it into a completely different trip).

I don't have a smartphone because our cell coverage is so bad at home it would be pretty worthless, but I've always wondered what would happen if I was using the smartphone GPS and my kid called and wanted to talk. Would I have to pull over and take the very important call or hang up and get to my destination and call my kid back?

Nope, most will put the call through, better ones will place the call in the "background" so you can hear it, but keep the nav up visually so you dont lose that.

I'll take a look at that with a small local trip, I think Google Now has that feature, not sure though.

Not sure if so,e of you know this or not but most smartphones as well as tablets have a stand alone GPS system. Currently have my old Bionic set up for GPS/torque. It has been pretty accurate so far with no service.

SO how do I get the app on the old phone ( have an old original droid I might set up this way for the bike) OR are you talking about google maps?

Download WAZE on your smartphone (it's free). Best GPS I've ever used in both US and abroad. Also, it reports speed cameras, red light cameras, road hazards, police, accidents, etc.
