1) Director's choice.

2) Comedian's style.

3) It was the 1970's in film, not as much weirdness then than now in film. IMHO.

4) It was based on an actual candy company. Magic realism was brought out in full force and after seeing this flick every child wanted 'candy'!

5) With a believable people person character almost everyone can relate to him/her. (Ex: Look at Depp's character, could you easily relate to him? Would you want your kids around this guy?) P.S. He reminded me of M. Jackson.
Yeah but why does that audience need to relate Willy Wonka to an every day type of person? MAybe that's the way its supposed to be

Maybe that was the original plan, beats me. We really won't know unless we read the book. The reasons I mentioned above are the best I can conceive.

Yeah, but he says "don't touch that squirrel's nuts", so it's gotta be good.
 It does have some funny parts. I think I liked the end with the voice of 'James Earl Jones' the most.

I found more humor in the sarcasm in the 1971 original.:yay:

I read the book when I was a kid and I have a memory of a more ominous and science-fictiony Willie Wonka than the one portrayed by Gene Wilder. When I see the previews, Depp looks about right.

Roald Dahl also writes some excellent "Twilight Zone" type of short stories for adults, with plot twists and great kicker endings.

I heard that Johnny Depp tried to use Marilyn Manson as his "inspiration" to this new version of his character.

I wanna say the book version of Willy Wonka is a very dark story and not the light hearted one Gene Wilder played in the first movie. We all must remember Tim Burton was not trying to remake the "original" to the tee but to put his twist and some of the book line into the movie.

The original rumor was they wanted Marilyn Manson to play Willy Wonka. I don't know if I want to see it. One on the posters instantlly brought to my mind Clock Work Orange. :twitch: I think it's the hat.

Saw it last night, and BL I disagree with you, I LOVED this version, but then again I have a dark sense of humor and a dislike for most children.

I'll probably go see it again tomorrow I liked it that much. :yay:

I guess they were both mean in their own way.

I like how the story wasn't a carbon copy of the old one. Something new and interesting. :yay:

The funniest part of the entire move is at the beginning when the grandma says "I like grapes!".
