We had us a riot last night!

A group of yoots swarmed the streets, ridin' into town, a-whompin' and a-whumpin' every livin' thing that moves within an inch of its life. They descended on the Walmart about a mile from my house and looted it, caused a bunch of mayhem in the main tourist area, fights breaking out in the street, etc.

Numerous threads about it here:

So of course people are freaking out, wanting to cancel Spring Break, cancel tourism, blah blah blah. Now, I think I saw a report that we get over 100,000 visitors during Spring Break; the problem children were maybe 100 people. So clearly SB is largely peaceful with packs of young people doing normal things, like overdrinking and puking in the streets or ODing on drugs. There are also a ton of families and older people as well.

Not sure what's going to be done to prevent it in the future, or if anything can be done. But if it were up to me I'd have a large police presence throughout the city in the areas where these folks are most likely gather. The second someone jumps up on a car and starts twerking, give 'em the wood shampoo and haul 'em off to jail. When cops see a potential situation, swarm them and shut it down right then and there. Nip it....in the bud. Because once something like that gets started, it's all over.

I love living in a resort town and I love the stuff we have because we're such a big tourist destination. So I don't want them canceling any of that, just get a freaking handle on it and have a zero tolerance policy. That way you don't impact the vacationers and partiers, it falls directly on the dumbshits who don't know how to act. If someone bitches about RACIST! tell them to STFU.

But it says something about the people who make up our government, both local and federal...that they're idiots who couldn't make a logical decision to save their lives. They freak out and react instead of coming up with a plan. Then I realize it's ALL people, especially in groups, that appear to check their common sense at the door.

Anyway, between hurricanes and feral spring breakers, it's pretty exciting here. :jet:

I see it as they are trying to prevent lawlessness.

If it didn't affect you, wouldn't you want them to crack down hard on it?

We had the windows open yesterday. Beginning at around 6:30, it was 1 constant police siren for about 4 hours.

We have a young family next door in the rental that are from Colorado. The dad asked me if it was like last night all the time here. I tried to reassure him it isn't usually like this. I'm not sure he believed me.

I'm not sure what you mean. I want them to crack down on the lawlessness, but not throw the baby out with the bath water, i.e. shut down all spring break tourism.

Back in my days as a college ute, Ft. Lauderdale was "the place to go" for spring break. This was in the late 70s. This was convenient for me because I had a place in Pompano Beach - my grandparents house and cabin cruiser - where I and some friends could stay for free. As the crowds grew larger and more rowdy over the years, the locals decided it all needed to be shut down. So it was shut down...completely. Daytona Beach and PCB quickly made it known that the spring breakers were welcome there and that's where the crowds and their money went. Many hotels, restaurants and bars on the A1A stretch of Ft. Lauderdale soon died an economically painful death. By the time there was any backlash against those that shut it all down..it was too late.

See, that's what I hope they avoid. And since money talks, I have no doubt city government will want to keep those dollars flowing. The problem is that if they don't crack down on the drugs and lawlessness of the kiddies, they'll start losing the families and older vacationers. It's only like two weeks out of the year that all hell breaks loose, and even newbies like me know not to try and navigate party central during those two weeks, especially not at night.

Random acts of violence aside, that's a great drive through all the action and excitement - an attraction in itself. The people who expect moving traffic and lack of blaring music are just stupid.

A tough balancing act...one I sure wouldn't want to be deciding on as a city official. Can't ever make everyone happy.

I have a feeling a lot of people were tired of normal spring break and this was just the straw that broke the camel's back.

Some people only understand high and right. Sometimes it's needed to send a message.

Nab the rioters and hold them until spring break is over. You can hold them 72 hours without charges. After 71, charge them with rioting and hold them without bail until trial. Schedule the trials for 3 months down the road.

One of my professors told me in the 70s he hitchhiked to FL and back for spring break, him and a friend were in GA when a sheriff car pulled up and told them they were vagrants. He got a couple nights in jail, his friend had a pocket knife on him that was 1/4" too long and got put onto a work detail for six months.

Some of the things he said the deputy said to him:
"You boys don't look like you are from around here"
"So you're from up north, lots of unsolved crimes up north, you wouldn't know about any of those would you?"
"What are you boys doing along my road?"

He said he thought he was gonna have to squeal like a pig before it was over.

Increased police presence and zero tolerance. If BLM or whoever bitches about racism, point out the thousands of black kids that didn't get in trouble and arrested, then go tell them to FT.

Something to be said for chain gangs making bigger rocks into smaller rocks.
