Has anyone else heard the debate over this, I don't know a bunch about it, but have heard a bit, that they are debating on weigh in's for certain grades, to help fight obesity......

Am I the only one that finds this Ludacris??

didn't they used to do fat checks in P.E? For the Presidential fitness awards and what not? Or is this something totally different and I missed the story?

I remember the fat checks. They used to pinch your skin under your arm and measure it and that supposedly told them what your fat percentage was or something.

Yeah they used to (and may still) put that thing on your arm that somehow determined like your percentage of body fat.....but this is actual weigh in's...like you know the class stands in line and they are weighed on scales.....Ludacris I say...

My daughter is in second grade, and has put on a few pounds, she is by no means fat, but not the skinny little thing she has been in previous years, and she comes home occasionally asking if she is fat  2nd grade??? So, NO I definately don't think they need weigh in's......
I guess I just don't understand what they will accomplish?? mandatory diets?? yeah right.....Like kids don't have scales at home, like they aren't weighed at the doctors.....I just totally do not agree with it, although like I have said before I am not fully educated on the subject.

That's absurd:duh:

Does this mean they will be implementing more PE and other physical activities into the kids day? Doubt it!

I think this is a great idea. You have all these Nintendo kids sitting on their butts eating Cheetos and their parents just let them. Good eating and exercise habits start young - if you wait until they're teens, it's too late and they become these porky adults at the Bon Buffet.

I agree, but my kids both play sports year 'round and neither would be accused of starving.

Any chance this is related to the school's milk program? I understand when a school gets into the state program it also has to accept a nutritional program that dictates the cafeteria offerings, what can be sold as fundraisers, and that weigh-ins are required. Our school is getting educated on this right now.

I understand the problem starts young, but, just what is weighing the kids at schools going to solve? Like I said, it is not likethey can put the kids on mandatory diet and exercise programs. Don't you think that this will just fuel the eating disorders in young girls??

:yeahthat: My oldest boy is pretty big. He plays sports year round also. His doctor once questioned our eating habits at home until she saw my other kids and husband. They are all bone skinny.

I think some people are just destined to be large.

That's what I am imagining.....
Not to mention that people weigh differently.....muscle mass and all....I weighed WAY more in middle school and high school than anyone ever would have guessed, I played soccer and cheered, so was pretty muscular......
Looking at my daughter she has my same body style, her little legs are all muscle........Kids at that age don't understand why they weigh more....

My question is what exactly is the school going to do with this information? Who will have access to this info? Can Susie Social Worker use it in charges against parents for abuse if your kid is too fat or too skinny? Is a "fat letter" or a "underweight letter" going to come home from school saying your kid has exceeded or not met the government recommended weight for his/her age and height?

A lot of the policies and programs in our schools are intended to help the kids who are "at risk". This sounds like one of those cases. Example:

Teacher to school nurse: I'm concerned that little Timmy doesn't seem to be growing like the other kids.

Nurse: Let's look. You are right. His weight is below average, and he has lost three pounds this year. I'll check with the parents to see if there's a medical issue.

In a perfect world, the schools would stick to teaching. Since a large part of society refuses to take responsibility for rasing their kids, they expect the schools to do it. If a kid died of malnutrition and the schools did nothing about it, the liberals would blame the school, not the parents.
