Weigh-In's in Elementary Schools?

Wayyyyyyyy back long ago, we had a school nurse there on a daily basis, we had a Dr. come and give us a physical once a year and we also go our tb tine tests there. I can't remember specifics but I am sure we got weighed. I do remember a piece of pencil graphite being found in my back and having it removed

If the issue is to indeed determine overall health of the school's populous and look for anyone of risk (grave obesity or anorexic), then the children should be weighed "blind", with only the chart holder knowing their weight. If anyone's weight does scream out a health risk, the parents can be notified. The other data can then be used for the statistical value and the weights can be entered into the child's history for a reference point.

It was on the news this morning. Personally, I think they should stick to teaching kids things like proper punctuation. :yay:

Since a large part of society refuses to take responsibility for rasing their kids, they expect the schools to do it. If a kid died of malnutrition and the schools did nothing about it, the liberals would blame the school, not the parents.
And there you have it.

When I was a kid, we got weighed when we got our tine tests, like Morgie said. It wasn't in front of the whole class or anything - you lined up in front of the nurse's office and went in one at a time. It was no big deal and nobody developed an eating disorder that I'm aware of. Kids who are chubby know they're chubby, and so do their classmates. It's no big secret.

But CMC asked if the schools would then incorporate more PE, recess and physical activity into the school day. This is an excellent question because schools tend to cut PE and recess rather than increase it, and I'd guess that this is why so many kids are little chunks these days.

So we actually CAN blame the teachers unions for overweight kids. If they hadn't pissed and moaned about more in-service days and other days off, there would be plenty of time for kids to learn the curriculum without having to cut PE and recess. And we can blame teachers unions for the Ritalin phenomenon because what kid can sit still in a classroom all day without any physical outlet?

Has anyone else heard the debate over this, I don't know a bunch about it, but have heard a bit, that they are debating on weigh in's for certain grades, to help fight obesity......

Am I the only one that finds this Ludacris??
I don't have a problem with it.. if a parent doesn't recognize that there 220 lb ten year old is overweight, or may have serious health problems then somebody needs to tell them.. I mean what are the chances this kid is being seen regularly by ANY doctor?

I see some kids and think it shoud be considered child abouse.. a 7 year old really has no control about how heavy he she is, but if the kid is sooo fat they can't make a fist, or bend at the waist, who is resposible?

Of course I was brought up in DOD schools, where part of school every year was a dental exam, and teeth fixins.. weigh ins, eye exams.. flouride treatents, shots.. etc etc.

I don't really see the big deal, as long as the "weigh ins" are done in private (i.e. not in front of the class) and are done for a purpose. It's not hurting anybody.

Hell no, weigh them in in front of everybody.. kids need ammo to pick on other kids.. fat kids need to be toughened up.. learn to deal with life. MAYBE they won't ##### about having to buy two plane tickets when their fat azzes grow up..

I disagree.....I guess as long as the weight is not revelaed to even the kid being weighed that I can see thit as ok. You know how kids are, they will discuss and a child that thinks they are perfectly normal may weigh a little more than another and discuss it honestly and be made fun of.

I also think that if there is a 210 lb 10 year old, then the parents know, I just don't see the point in it, parents of obese kids, have to know they are obese, what is weighing them in school and sending the parents a letter that says "your kid is fat, lay off the potato chips" going to help? The parents have to know this already and not care....The school certainly can't ENFORCE a diet at home.

I ask again. Is this related to the school's milk program? Please call the school and ask. The list of things our school will be required to do, if we participate in this particular program, includes weighing the students.

What does it matter, though? When a kid goes to the doctor and gets weighed, they are told how much they weigh. If anything maybe it can help stave off eating disorders, or obesity and can give a heads up to parents who aren't paying attention. Either way, I don't see it as a big deal. Like Vrai said, a kid knows if they're over or underweight, a number isn't going to change their perception.
