Ben was cheesy but Willard was scary as ####, and the remake with Crispin Glover was even scarier. But Crispin Glover gives me nightmares no matter who he plays.

Anyway, TKIT, stop sleeping in rat infested shelters. Guh.

Those mice

Have a genetic imprint to stay within 10' of those shelters and it has been so for as long as the shelters have existed. I can say that they were infested in 1972 and it hasn't changed since.

I wonder how many generations of mice that is ?

Either getting charged by a big mamma black bear and her stopping 10ft short of me after getting in between her and her cub on accident or followed after hiking 2 hrs after dark by a pack of coyotes.

The mice in the shelters were actually the worst. A black bear will generally run from a person, unless you threaten her cub. A mouse will chew your pack to hell trying to get into your food bag. Thats why we used mouse hangers. But you can still feel them running over you at night. And they carry all kinds of nasty diseases.

And then try walking 20 miles with a 30lb pack with only one strap. Plus having to pay 200 bucks or so for a new one.

:yikes: :faint: :yikes:

I'm glad you got some time on the trail. It is an amazing place with lots of colorful characters in the woods. I told people in 2008 I was going hiking for a while and by the looks they gave me, you would have thought I grew another head.

Funny how we live so close to the trail but the majority of the population will never set foot on it. I've heard many young thru hikers say that the experienced changed their life.

It was a hell of an adventure. Around 300 miles on a bicycle and about 700 on the Appalachian Trail. I have stories that would raise the hair on your neck and make a grown man quiver. Got snowed on, met some amazing people and have started planning my next trip. A walk across America with a goat.

What an awesome thread and story. Thank you for sharing. I am the one that stays home and tends the fire, but my husband is an ultra runner. He just finished his third 50 miler, and is doing his first 100 miler in a few months. It is not exactly the same as what you have accomplished, but, similar; I can identify, and know the endurance (through my husband) you had to have to accomplish your goal. I am sure you are proud, and you should be. If I had a goat, I would lend it to you for free. Good luck on your next adventure.
