My interest is in why the IRS hasnt gotten them in an audit.

They travel around the country for these protests they show up with vile signs, somebody has to be paying for plane tickets, meals , rooms and other misc. expenses.

Where does the Church get its money and is it supposedly a non-profit? Who pays these people while they arent working but protesting?

Most of thei protests are supposedly about homosexuals although how any sane person can tie together funerals for soldiers with homosexuals I cannot fathom. They even tried to protest the Amish funeral in pa. when the 4 little girls were killed.

Surely I would be the last to sponsor political or criminal harassment of anyone, but I cannot see how these people continually get away without some agency taking up the banner of getting these people dispersed in a dignified manner, before some innocent person filled with sorrow does something really stupid and throws a hand grenade in the middle of this pack of fools.

It's an excellant scam.
A "church" is non-profit and tax exempt. They make money by filing lawsuits if somebody infringes on their right of assembly, free speach or if they aren't provided equal protection.

:yeahthat: It has never been about religion since they started. Its been about lawsuits. They want a reaction, violence, and repression of their freedom of speech, so they can sue. Thats why it was started by some SOB lawyer family. Don't confuse them with a real church. Its one big family.

I believe the nation made a mistake here. Had they allowed this bunch on the rez, the Indian police could have arrested and jailed them for any infraction they saw fit. A lawyer could not get them out on H.C. 'cause the Indian laws on the rez are immune from White Man's laws. A smart Indian could have taken them out of circulation for a long as the council wanted to pay for their dog and water in jail.

Sounds like a good idea to me.

What that church is doing is wrong any way you look at it. It sounds like the old line: "Feeding on another person's pain and suffering for further their own agenda". That's not any way for anyone in a church group to act.

But you don't automatically get a payday, even if a judge rules in your favor. Certainly those cases get appealed, and then there's still the collection process. Interesting to note that the ACLU has filed a lawsuit on behalf of the Westboro Baptist Church, saying that anti-picketing laws infringe on their right to free speech.

I, too, am curious how they're funded and whether they enjoy tax-exempt status.

Most cases will be settled before going to court for a lesser amount then the original suit. If there's any chance of losing, it's cheaper to pay $100k to WBC than to pay lawyers and then pay WBC 2 or 3 times as much.

I wrote a 30 page paper on Rev Fred Phelps and his followers in college. This is just the tip of the iceberg with this family. First of all, they picket military funerals because of the "Don't ask don't tell" stance the military upholds. Not only do they picket funerals, they are also on a nationwide tour to erect Matthew Shepherd monuments that state, "Matthew Shepherd entered hell on this day (Bday) for (a jumbled bible scripture). They plan on putting these monuments anywhere a 10 commandments monument is b/c it is freedom of religion. So now, all over the US, our ten commandments monuments are being taken down to keep Phelps from putting up his hateful monument. I could go on for days about this family.

I'm waiting for the day when they show up to a funeral for a soldier who has about ninety-five 300 pound redneck relatives who don't give a flying rat's ass if they spend a few nights in jail.

I hope it's on camera when they snatch the signs out of their hands and breaks the picket across their effing faces, and stomps a squealing worm out of their asses.



I'm also looking forward to the day when one of these pieces of #### dies, and has their funeral unceremoniously heckled and disrespected by someone whom they did it to.

As tempting as that is,, and it really is.

do you honestly think you could go so low as to bring yourself to their level of ignorance?

somehow I doubt it.

Even though they are the scum of the earth for what they do, their families deserve the same respect at their funerals as the families of those they picket
