This is very sad.... Maybe even genuine but I'm jaded. I know a guy who walked out on his job 3 weeks before Christmas and refuses to make his wife work.

Can't help but read this and think this is them .

Sometime ya gotta hit rock bottom before you stand up.

I told a friend this the other day:

Even if the dad is a scammer and deadbeat, giving is its own reward and you can't feel bad about getting some little kid a Christmas present.

that is a shame, now a days you have to be leary in helping people because you dont want to be taken. I wonder if there is a way to check it out to see if it legit?

There are tons of social programs for a family like this! I hate being so cautious.

hmmm did not know that. I would hate to see a child go without christmas. It would suck having to move right around the holidays.

so sad......I am strapped this year....but that doesn't mean I don't donate money throughout the month of december. Just did it this past sunday at the festival of giving at greenbrier mall.....5.00 to shop helps support reading programs at schools. My brother is having a toys for tots drive at his school..salvation army is steady ringing their bells and I have to put something in everyone I see, even if it is change. Every little bit helps, and I hope that these folks get the help they need!

They already gave the dog away... "we had to get rid of thier beloved dog, who protected them from a very violent neighborhood." Maybe they're just afraid of the neighborhood now that they don't have the dog. Or maybe it's a bad confluence of circumstances.

It's right to be skeptical, but if it checks out...

its unfortunate what society has become. To question situations like this. fifty years ago, people kept their doors unlocked at night and let their kids play till the street lights came on. Now people are skeptical to help a neighbor or someone who is in need, thinking it might be a scam or ploy for money. The circumstances are what we make it. Maybe come 2008, voters will select a president who is capable of bringing back social peace in this country. How can we help others if we don't help ourselves?

Yeah I do have one or two smart brain cells. :yay:

I hate it when

you think your are doing good and the person receiving the charity is not even smart enough to not shove it in your face before you are even out of sight.

Gophette and I were leaving Foodlion in Leonardtown one day and were approached by a young woman. She said she was out of money and needed formula and food for her child. She looked pitiful ( I guess crystal meth does that to you). Anyhow...we couldn't resist her plea and gave her the money and continued on to our car. When we got to the car we looked back to see that she was not going into Foodlion but was entering the door to the liquor store. Maybe she was trying to boost her income by investing the money I gave her into a winning lottery ticket.

I HATE being so cynical and I hate feeling guilty not helping those who truly need it. It almost seems like people need credible references that they are truly in need before we feel free to give them a hand. That sucks whether it's the Christmas season or not.

I got taken by a woman who approached me at the post office in Prince Frederick, said she needed money for gas for her car. I asked if she needed a ride to get gas, she said no and that her brother was coming to pick her up to go get gas. I had a $10.00, gave it to her and went on my way...Later I saw her with a group of people outside of 7-11...
Was I taken or not?

Maybe there was a need for gas, but I think not. Who would think to run into panhandlers at the post office?
I too like to help, but it was my choice and I thought it was the right thing to do.
I will be more careful next time....

I guess the best response (in my instance) would have been to offer to go back in to Foodlion and buy what she needed for her child. If she had balked at that, then too damn bad. No more cash money.

If you're hungry, let's go to Arby's or McD's and I'll buy you one of them high calorie high fat meals and a chocolate to get you through the day. Need food for the kids, let's hit the aisles at the supermarket. Need crack, meth, booze, beer or a lotto ticket then too F'n bad.

I agree...just last weekend my mom and I went shopping, saw a guy coming out of Old Navy...he came up to us and said he needed money for a bus ticket. Apparently the other money he had he spent on a new leather jacket..that he wasn't wearing and had it in his hand. He told us he just got out of the hospital and wasn't from the area. His story was shaky and we just couldn't believe him. We told him we didn't have any cash (I usually only carry plastic) and we were on our way. I feel sorry but I don't. From the outward appearance he was a dope addict. His nails were bitter and yellow and looked like they were about to fall off. Didn't smell the best either. :(
