What kind of dog to get

Some kind of coon hound. Nothin' more American than huntin' coons in the swamp.

Oh my... any "Hound dog" does not make a good PET. They need a job and get bored very easy. And they have a smell to them as well.

Ok MrZ... on a serious note. You need to first look at your life style, activity level and family.

That will help you get started and not pick the "wrong" breed.
Take your time and research the breeds... even if its mixed. The traits will still be there!

Good luck and have fun :yay:
Good for you for going pound shopping. :yahoo: (but if you are thinking about a lab... I know where a lab puppy is )

The Catahoula Leopard Dog is thought to have occupied North America the longest, but they are not recommended for inexperienced dog owners or anyone who wants an "easy" dog.

"You must be ready to teach and exercise a Catahoula. If not, he will eat your house. The Catahoula will not let you forget that you own a dog." - Don Abney

:lmao:

I love my catahoula to pieces and he's a very sweet boy, but he's anything but laid back.

You should consider a lab. I know one that is already grown up that won't eat your house or your stuff and you can leave him alone all day. His name is Sarge and he needs a home.

There's the American Foxhound. A.k.a. the Texas beagle.
american foxhound - Google Search

I had one..

GREAT dogs.. Fantastic family dog, great with kids.

Loyal to the family to the end, and a VERY intelligent breed, easy to train.

NEVER smelled, but did like to shed.

I had a young child at the time, and he was uber-protective. If he didn't know you, and I wasn't in the room, you were NOT going to touch her. He almost bit my dad, pissed him off at first then realized the dog was protecting his grand-daughter. Dad was reaching into the crib with out my or mom in the room. They were best buds after that.

She could pull his tail while he was eating, and even pulled his toungue about out of his mouth, and he'd just sit there and take it.

Irish Setters are great family dogs and good around children and other pets.
Lotsa' energy !
Very loyal and friendly.
They are really smart but I think that sometimes they pretend to be scatterbrained
just to get attention :lmao:

Kinda' like a redhead with a blonde mentality :jet:

Go to Walmart and walk down the stuffed animal isle. Plenty of dogs there for you to "pick up".

Aren't those shipped in from China? And don't you have to have a "sweat shop" for them to run around in? Or don't you need a little chinese woman running around after him with a clever? I don't think those are American.

Well you can always be locally patriotic and go with a Chesepeake Bay Retriever. I'd never get one myself, being a Dobe fanatic and all, but hey, can't get much closer to home than a Chessie.
