So do you think there would have been, in general, different reactions between the sexes? There are a lot of "dudes" like Dipstick out there, I didn't know...

I think he's an abused child. You don't hit kids with a rope. You just don't. If I saw some mom swat her kid's butt in public I wouldn't bat an eyelash but a beating like that is something else entirely. If she loses control like that right out in the street, what do you suppose she does behind closed doors?
My instinct is to protect the weak and it overrides any good sense I might have. Later I think, damn, that was pretty stupid of me but it's a complete reaction with no thought behind it.
Yeah, I think most guys wouldn't hesitate if it was a woman beating the child. At the same token, you say several neighbors witnessed it and not one of them did anything.... I find that pathetic!
Inkah, here's the thing:
It probably doesn't matter what you did this time because there will be a next time. And a time after that. Then after that. This isn't the first time ol' mom has lost it and beat the kid and highly doubtful it will be the last. Honestly? There's nothing you can do, which is the saddest part.
I think many of us are like that and some of us (me) have had to learn the hard way.
Intervention gone wrong?
You could say that.
Long story so I'll give you the abbreviated version. About four years ago I witnessed something bad happen to a little girl and acted on instincts only to be met by a baseball bat to the back of the head. Fortunately for me another person was there to call the police. Lesson learned! Now its call police, get bat, follow initial instinct and attack in that order. I'm not a small guy either. At 6'4" I can hold my own but thats until a baseball bat comes out of nowhere to the back of the head.
That's a tough one... like you said you want to balance helping others with keeping you and your family safe.
Part of me thinks taking a video with your phone would have been a good idea. I imagine the police and social services could do more with a video then just someone's statement (but I could be wrong). But part of me thinks it would be awful to just sit there and take a video.
Is it illegal to spray people with a hose?
You could say that.

What happened to the girl and her attacker/you attacker? And how did you survive it all?
I can't think of anything more callous than to stand there taking video while a child gets beaten.
Perfect form tackle on Mom and dare her to beat me with that rope. You want to spank your kid? more power to you. You bring a weapon into the mix and all bets are off.
Appears so. Where did the "newly hired" dispatcher crap come into this conv.?? Maybe your call was answered by a "newly hired" coffee drinker. Stop trying to deflect.Aw chit! You think the officer that answered the phone was less competent than some newly hired dispatcher? I didn't know. Thank you for the lesson.
Maybe a call to 911 vs. a coffee drinker at a desk gets an immediate response. After all, 911 is for "emergencies" whereas the coffee drinker did not see it as such. Not sure I know what to make of the lack of response from the cops.
as the coffee drinker did not see it as such.
