what would you do?

So do you think there would have been, in general, different reactions between the sexes?

Yeah, I think most guys wouldn't hesitate if it was a woman beating the child. At the same token, you say several neighbors witnessed it and not one of them did anything.... I find that pathetic!

Inkah, here's the thing:

It probably doesn't matter what you did this time because there will be a next time. And a time after that. Then after that. This isn't the first time ol' mom has lost it and beat the kid and highly doubtful it will be the last. Honestly? There's nothing you can do, which is the saddest part.

I think he's an abused child. You don't hit kids with a rope. You just don't. If I saw some mom swat her kid's butt in public I wouldn't bat an eyelash but a beating like that is something else entirely. If she loses control like that right out in the street, what do you suppose she does behind closed doors?

Tis exactly what I think. Not sure I know what to make of the lack of response from the cops.

My instinct is to protect the weak and it overrides any good sense I might have. Later I think, damn, that was pretty stupid of me but it's a complete reaction with no thought behind it.

I think many of us are like that and some of us (me) have had to learn the hard way.

And herein lies the part that kicks my ass. :(
but I really don't want to be the person that does nothing.

Intervention gone wrong?

You could say that.

Long story so I'll give you the abbreviated version. About four years ago I witnessed something bad happen to a little girl and acted on instincts only to be met by a baseball bat to the back of the head. Fortunately for me another person was there to call the police. Lesson learned! Now its call police, get bat, follow initial instinct and attack in that order. I'm not a small guy either. At 6'4" I can hold my own but thats until a baseball bat comes out of nowhere to the back of the head.

That's a tough one... like you said you want to balance helping others with keeping you and your family safe.

Part of me thinks taking a video with your phone would have been a good idea. I imagine the police and social services could do more with a video then just someone's statement (but I could be wrong). But part of me thinks it would be awful to just sit there and take a video.

Is it illegal to spray people with a hose?

What happened to the girl and her attacker/you attacker? And how did you survive it all?

I would think that might be assault. Then there would be an outcry to ban hoses. Good idea, though! It is bad when someone like Inkah wants to help, but has to take pause to wonder what to do, and then worry about repercussions. I feel I would have reacted the same as she did. I am not sure how affective I would be as I am 5'2" and 115 lbs. And, then for that child to heckle her, and asks if she beats her children. Inkah did the best she could. I am sure many of us want to save the world. We have to watch out for ourselves first, and help if we can, second. Just so, so sad.

Oh dear, that is bad. I am glad you are ok. You must have a hard head! But, seriously, that was heroic that you put yourself in harms way. It is hard to understand that some people can be such animals.

I know the child was turned over to social services and the assailant went away for awhile. No charges were filed against me, but the person who wacked me was charged with battery among other things. I have no clue where the family is now since they move shortly after the incident. We had to spend a little time in court.

You being a witness may have spend a little time in court to.

Aw chit! You think the officer that answered the phone was less competent than some newly hired dispatcher? :( I didn't know. Thank you for the lesson.
Appears so. Where did the "newly hired" dispatcher crap come into this conv.?? Maybe your call was answered by a "newly hired" coffee drinker. Stop trying to deflect. :coffee:

Not sure I know what to make of the lack of response from the cops.
Maybe a call to 911 vs. a coffee drinker at a desk gets an immediate response. After all, 911 is for "emergencies" whereas the coffee drinker did not see it as such. :coffee:
