What's the secret

Comb with a wide tooth comb while it is wet. Do it gently from top to bottom. Use detangler spray to work your way down. Once you finish combing her hair, do not blow dry. Let it dry naturally.

Braid her hair while it is wet after combed. When she gets up in the morning, her hair will be very easy to be brushed without any knots.

It helps to look in to the type of hair your kiddo has. If she has whispy, baby-fine hair I would not blow dry it. Instead, put detangler in it and just let her sleep on it. She's going to get knots anyway. In the morning, dampen it again and comb through it befre brushing it out and braid it.

My kiddo has thick hair and refuses to wash it at night. She gets up early to shower because she hates bed head:lol: She also chooses to keep it short rather than deal with a lot of brushing.

I disagree with all you saying brush from top to bottom. I'd definitely work your way UP the hair. Of course, brush downwards, but if her hair is long, I'd brush the bottom few inches, then work up a few, etc. Make sense?

I always thought start at the bottom and work up too.

I have long hair and work from bottom to the top. If you start at the top you are just brushing all the knots to the end and now you got a big ol ball of knots. I don't know that's just how figure it, I agree with you.

Also like most people said use a pick or wide tooth comb while hair is wet, a brush is not good for hair when wet.

But wait, there's more...

:nono: Actually, it is easier on the child if you start at the bottom and work your way up to the scalp. If you start at the top, you're essentially pushing any tangles or knots down into potentially other knots and tangles, making it a huge mess when you get to the bottom. When combing from the bottom, if you hit a knot/tangle, wrap hand in fist around the section of hair just above the tangle/knot so that you're not tugging through hair and pulling from the scalp; rather, you're pulling from the fist (e.g., just keep slack in the section of hair between scalp and fist). Then continue working your way up that section until you get to the scalp; then proceed around the head.

My sister-in-law was griping last summer about combing her daughter's hair, and when I watched her, I figured out why: she was trying to get through a massive amount of long, thick, wet hair with a brush. The poor kid was yelling "ow, owww, OWWWWWW" the whole time. I grabbed my combs (wide tooth and narrow), and did in 3 minutes what took her 30 every night.

Well thank you all for your suggestions. I will try the detangler tonight after her bath and see how that works. I feel bad when I brush her hair because I feel like I'm hurting her. Thanks again everyone!

What's the secret to blowdrying and brushing a little girls hair? Every time that I do it, it seems like I'm ripping her hair out and she starts crying saying that it hurts. Should I blowdry it first then brush it when it dries or brush it wet? And her hair seems to have alot of knots in it. Being a single dad to a little girl is harder than I thought.

Conditioner and patience! The really kewl part is it won't be long before she and her girlfriends will totally take over the hair brush business and you won't be allowed near her hair! Take pictures of her hair now because it won't be long when the coloring starts and she, and you, have no idea what it used to look like!

Hang in there! Won't be long... :buddies:

I don't have a daughter. I've forgotten the process because I don't need to do it anymore. I discovered using conditioner helped.

I'm glad that you watched your sister-in-law to helped find solution to the problem. :yay:

Rich, if I remember correctly she has baby fine hair. Don't use TOO much detangler, it will appear "greasy" and weight her hair down. a few squirts should do it. Don't over kill. Big tooth comb, bottom to top. Let air dry.

Also, you don't need to wash it every night. Every other night should be perfectly acceptable if she isn't getting it really dirty (playing in sand, sticky from candy or food).

You really need to learn how to braid. I'll show you. Any volunteers with long hair that would like their hair did?

Yeah she does have fine hair. Everybody is telling me to braid it. I guess I'm gonna have to learn how to do that.

easy peasy. Start with a simple braid.

Part hair into three parts l l l <<<< like so

Take the one on the right and cross over the one in the middle. Take the one on the left and cross over the one in the middle (the middle one should now be the one that was originally the one on the right). Take the one on the right and cross over the middle one (should now be the one that started on the left. ) Repeat until you reach the end. Put a pony holder in, taa daaa. Good daddy.

Rich, I feel your pain. You met my little girl, (I guess she isn't so little now but she will always be my little girl). I was a single Dad with her and her older brother for quite a few years. I found that when you towel dry her hair you can't do it like we do ours. The harder you do it the more tangles she gets. I figued out after about a year of killing her when I combed her hair. If you just wrap her head in the towel for about ten minutes and then spray a little detangler in it before you comb it (with a large toothed comb) and then blow dry it while using a brush it seemed to not hurt her at all.

Good luck and call me when she gets about 19. I know someone that fancys her.:killingme

:yeahthat:

You can get some string and tape the three pieces to a table and practice on that!
