My laptop died :bawl: I don't know what is wrong with it, it just went :dead: I tried another power cord, that didn't work. I will have it looked at as there are many things on there of great importance to me (no I don't backup like a dumba$$).

In the meantime, help a computer dummie out. What do you think of these specifications?

FAST DELL GX-150

Intel Pentium III 1GHz

256MB RAM Memory (upgradeable to 512MB, see below)

20 GB IDE Hard Drive

CD-ROM (Play CD's,music, and programs)

10/100 LAN Ethernet Networking and Internet

Professionally refurbished at our facility

4 USB Ports (2 on front and 2 on rear)

Floppy Drive

This auction also includes the following:

17 INCH SVGA CRT Color Monitor (brand may vary)

It is a refurbished desktop computer for just over $200.00. I don't know what any of the numbers mean or whether it will let me connect to the internet.

I need to replace my laptop with something or I will be lost. I am Ebaying up a storm and need a computer!!

Any advise is greatly appreciated!!

TIA :flowers:

If nothing else, you DO NOT WANT windows 98. The hardware is older, won't run Vista without major upgrades (not that I recommend Vista all all), but it might be a bit pokey running XP as well. 20 Gb drive is bare minimum for the OS and email/surfing.

Windows 98 did bug me. I use XP now, never touched Vista (don't even know what that is).

Dumb question, do desktops have the wireless thingie inside it so I can connect to my neighbor or do I have to subscribe to dial up or something?

Would I be better off going with another laptop?

UGH!!! This is such poor timing.

Trust me.... don't even entertain Win 98.... not supported, won't run (without grief) a lot of newer software, security plagued...etc..etc...

The wireless built-in is something that you have to look for, not available on every laptop, but most of the newer ones do have it. Another reason to buy newer hardware.

If it were me, I would be looking for an inexpensive laptop (or desktop..) which has all new hardware. Good deals to be had at local stores. Also look on Dell's website, they have a restock/refurb site where you can get some great deals. Get one of your company techies to assist you in looking at the specs...
Dell Outlet Home & Home Office - Refurbished Laptops - Refurbished Laptop - Refurbished Notebook

I don't have company techies...that is why I came here :bawl:
I NEED NEED NEED a computer.
I need my dead one at least restored so I can get the stuff off it.
I don't have much money and wanted to pay with paypal.
UGH. :bawl:

If it doesn't come on at all, it's probably the power supply. They burn out  Much cheaper to replace that then buy a new computer.

Pentium III, Win 98 20g HD :boo:

does the laptop run on battery at all?

about the desktop, if you're desperate I've seen cheap ones at bestbuy for a little over 300.....they are more current, but have vista, and are usually eMachines (which I hear are pretty bad) or compaq. Also they usually have the celeron or sempron/duron cpus that suck, but at least you get a free monitor and printer. If you wait till black friday, you might be able to get a good deal on a pc for less than 300, maybe even a new laptop....

btw what are the specs of your laptop?

I don't know what that means. It's a Dell Inspiron E1505 if that helps.

I am going to try a different power supply cord and see if that works. My cord didn't even light up anymore, so maybe it's the cord. Just don't get how it happened. It was unplugged, laptop off, woke up and tried to work, but I could tell something was wrong since the display was so dim. Battery light came on and :dead:

Definitely sounds like the power brick.

The cord thing? If so, ex found one for $30. I am happy with my laptop, don't really want a new one. If that's all it is, I'll be much happier.

I remember there being a huge recall on Dell batteries a couple of months or year ago. I think your model is on that list.
Dell Battery Return Program

also the battery is most likely dead, so it works using the power cord only?
my laptop had a problem with the power cord too, right now I just bend the cylinder part of the cord and stick it under the laptop, so it stays on.....but have to use a separate keyboard and mouse because I can't move the laptop anymore. sometimes the cord gets bent back and forth so much that they got bad.....i have that problem with headphones a lot.

From the post I replied to, it sounds like that is the problem. I looked up the specs, and I would definitely try the cheap fix first. I don't want to sound condescending, but have you tried another electrical outlet?
