Where all the workers at?

In Pigeon Forge last week, saw signs on a couple of businesses stating they were closed a certain day (every Wednesday for instance) because of staffing shortages. I can't figure out why people are not working.
Part of the issue is that a lot of the "vacation spots" hire a lot of people with temporary work visas. They come over for a season, get replaced by others. The problem is that with COVID, the program stopped and has been real slow in getting back up to speed. (since those government employees are still working from home)

I got the impression pigeon forge doesn’t know what a migrant is. The busses from the border can’t climb those mountains...

when I stayed in Gatlinburg in 2018, it seemed about 1/4 of the hotel workers were from Europe

Ever since COVID, the motels I stay at for business travel usually only provide any room service on a request basis. The reduced level of room service is blamed, on a placard in the lobby usually, on lack of staff. I suspect this is a permanent situation.
That one has been before Covid. They used environmental reasons to cover being cheap, they were doing this as much as 10 years ago.

OC would be full of those types in the summer.

One of my favorite spots to eat has been closing on random Saturdays because they don't have the staff to operate. Last Friday they had to close early because the cook called in. Hate to see them shut down over something so dumb. They have had a help wanted sign up and Facebook posts for over a year now.

A grocery store has a sign up that says "supplement your unemployment, help wanted"

I think that one was a more inevitable industry thing. Marriott did this, put placards in the room saying it was to save water and the planet blah blah.
It sure makes economic sense, from a hotel operator's perspective. The absence of daily automatic room service has not inconvenienced me in the slightest.

I also wonder where the workers are at. If the service industry is struggling so much and there are help wanted signs everywhere, then what are these people doing if they are not getting anything above the usual unemployment benefits?
As a side note, apparently (from what I have heard) there are little to no Federal police on the base anymore. Apparently, all you see are uniformed personnel. Is this why the sudden change in lanes closing, backups, etc.?

This was definitely a thing before covid. I travelled a fair bit for work and retired shortly before covid hit. For the last couple years of travel it was always "to save the environment we will only give you new towels if you ask", and "maidservice provided upon request only". And we mostly stayed in Hilton and Marriott properties, so this wasn't the motel 6.

The towels service on request I get..see that all over the world and have for years. It was the cessation of daily room service...making the bed, replacing the coffee pouches, stocking the minibar, etc etc that stopped in literally every hotel I stay in.

I normally put the do not disturb sign up anyways, I don't like room service during my stay (unless its longer than say 4 nights). I don't use the minibar and I usually go down to the lobby for their coffee (and cookies) rather than use the room pouch stuff.

Where are these people going?

To New York and San Francisco, and camping out in the streets.

Stop feeding them and they will find a way to feed themselves.
Jobs are available.

We stayed in a Hilton brand for 2 nights over Labor Day weekend. They had set up 2 days worth of towels. We made the bed and no one came into the room to check or freshen up. I also go to the lobby each morning for coffee & tea for my wife.

They don't even come in to collect the trash. I have to leave that by the door in the morning, and then ask for trash bags once the spares in the bottom of the baskets are gone.
